When Oracle User Groups “collaborate”, Great Things Happen

While some may be wary of the number 13, for 3 Oracle user groups (IOUG, OAUG, Quest Intl.) 13 is a measure of success for their joint (collaborative?) conference “Collaborate”, next week in Denver. Now in its 13th year, the 6000 attendee strong Collaborate is the world’s largest independent Oracle user group gathering.  And Cisco, along with our storage partners NetApp and EMC will be there demonstrating a breadth of Oracle infrastructure solutions (check Cisco activities and major speaking sessions  here)

In addition, Cisco is the sponsor of both the Women in Technology reception and Women in Technology panel discussion.  Cisco CEO John Chambers has made news recently with his women’s initiatives at Cisco, so extending that support at Collaborate 13 is a natural.

Cisco will have a large presence in the Collaborate 13 exhibit hall and will also have multiple conference sessions highlighting how Cisco Unified Computing System  has been winning the hearts and minds of Oracle users around the world. Whether the Oracle user wants to “build their own” custom system or buy a preconfigured and fully tested “converged infrastructure” solution, or anything in between, Cisco and its Oracle eco-system partners have an answer.

Cisco Validated Designs for Cloud – Part 3 – Flexpod

Over the past two weeks, Tom Nallen introduced the concept and benefits of the Cisco Validated Design , then Laszlo Bojtos,  illustrated this concept with the Cloud Service Assurance for Virtualized Multi-Services Data Center 2.2 Cisco Validated Design, with a specific emphasis on the integration with Cisco Intelligent Automation for Cloud .

This week I talked with John Kennedy, a Cisco engineer who put a lot of energy on the FlexPod CVDs.

“So John, what is FlexPod ?
FlexPod is the result of collaboration between NetApp© and Cisco to create a cost-effective, scalable solution for cloud applications as well as standard virtualization support.  The FlexPod(t), a pre-defined, pre-tested solution, includes the compute, networking, and storage customers need in a validated (as in CVD) package. But unlike other validated solutions, FlexPod can be scaled up or out, not just one or the other.

What need does FlexPod address ?
It’s probably been a while since you had to source a motherboard. Many of us have done this in the past, in order to get desktop computer system that met our needs. Pre-configured systems were limited in their abilities, and custom design was beneficial.

But choices of personal computer systems have increased, and most folks don’t need to customize anymore, preferring to buy an entire computer system that’s been tested and designed to meet their needs. On the other hand, customers want to be able to expand the system they have to keep up with new technology, or to add capabilities.

Customers need to support multiple types of applications and have multiple purposes for their infrastructure, and the Cisco Validated Designs (CVDs) for FlexPod reflect that need. The architectures have been validated by engineers from both companies to ensure performance and stability.

Workload Automation, The Next Generation

I was talking to a few analysts this week on workload automation and some interesting themes came up.   Workload Automation (aka Job Scheduling) starting with IBM mainframes and job control language.  Over the years the automated execution of business processes (moving batch data  in real-time schedules) became a major workload in the data center.   This was extended from mainframe to distributed computing with Unix and then Windows compute.  Along with this came all the Enterprise Resource Planning and Business Intelligence package applications that made SAP and Oracle famous.  Moving the data around was absolutely mission critical.  Huge demand on the data center resources drove the need to begin to control the resource states of the target compute engines to be ready for the high demands of processing millions of transactions or running critical reports for the Enterprise.

Now here is the rub…

The 40 to 60 year old set (of which I am member) know all about this “in the background” processing and its importance.  The challenge now, with all the new Web applications being created and a new batch of IT professionals is that this critical part of the IT ecosystem is being forgot about, downplayed and generally not paid attention too until there is a big outage and enterprise controls and automation are put in place.  There are so many places where workload automation can be applied to help automate key processes.  Many of our customers of this product line have increased the size of their operations 2-3x over the past 3 years.  All this cool new technology and new products being sold are putting increased demands on workload automation.   Learn more about this cost saving automation technology, your CIO will thank you for it.

Big Data Performance Delivered: Oracle NoSQL Database on Cisco UCS

Last year , Oracle launched Oracle NoSQL to address the need of Big Data and analytics. Since then this commercial grade solution has been deployed on Cisco UCS, taking advantage on the high level of performances, and RAS capabilities of this game changer.

At Oracle OpenWorld, I met both Ashok Joshi , Oracle Senior Director NoSQL Database Development and Raghunath  Nambiar , Cisco Distinguished Engineer  UCS  who had together  a well attended session on Tuesday  to present the powerful combination of NoSQL running on Cisco UCS -- Check below the rich content slide deck .

In this short video, Asho Joshi explained us what are the benefits of a a commercial grade solution, as opposed to an open source, highlighting not only the cost reduction and cost containment, but also the promise of business continuity with multiple data center support, thanks to the computing and networking capabilitie provided by Cisco

At the speaking session, Raghunath  described the huge momentum of Cisco UCS, which is now with close to 16,000 unique customers, present in more than half of all Fortune 500 customers data centers.
