Enivest and Cisco Deploy a DWDM Network at Light Speed

In the western Scandinavian fjords of Norway, Enivest an internet service provider has deployed a new optical transport network using a Cisco optical network solution (NCS 2000)While this, in itself, may not be big news to most people, the real story is about how Enivest managed this deployment.  For people who are not familiar with the expertise and time needed for installing and then lighting up an optical network, it typically takes two days per node/site with some give or take depending on the level of the technician’s expertise.
So, if we 
consider the eight (8) sites and nodes that Enivest lit up along a 260km span of Sognefjord in Norway (see map below) we 
would estimate the deployment to have taken upwards of 16 days.  Enivest logoWhat is impressive abut this deployment is that it took less than a week for Enivest to install and turn on over 260 km of fiber running through 8 sites/nodes for its customers. This kind of agility is important for service providers who are continually looking to cut operating costs and realize new revenue streams.

Spring PONC makes Triumphant Return to Dallas

Cisco’s Packet Optical Networking Conference (PONC) triumphantly returned to Dallas this past May after two consecutive years in San Jose. Over 270 members of the network operator community attended the ninth iteration of this annual event. The conference followed the traditional 3-day agenda:

  • Day-1: General Session presentations featuring Cisco leadership/experts, industry analyst and VIP customer presentations, with the Keynote delivered by Kelly Ahuja, Cisco SVP Service Provider Segment.
  • Day-2: Workshops – Attendees selected from 12 sessions covering a variety of solutions including packet, optical, SDN, EMS/NMS, orchestration, cloud, PON, transceiver technology, and segment routing.
  • Day-3: Exposition & Bonus Technical Sessions. A variety of over 10 live demonstrations were on display including 4 bonus technical sessions covering TDM migration, Optical Network Design, High Speed Optics, and Virtual Routers.

Cisco EPN Manager Helps Carriers Drive Packet Optimized Transport

TDM transport remains the backbone of service provider networks throughout the world, but technology has matured to the point that we’re finally able to see a path toward truly converged, packet optimized transport networks. This shift puts service providers on a plan to eventually retire their SONET/SDH infrastructure, saving significant space, power, and other operational costs. For end users, it promises bandwidth flexibility and an even easier ability to tap into cloud-based applications.

Of course, such a change won’t happen overnight but will take time to ensure existing customer services aren’t affected in terms of the performance, latency, and availability.

While there has been a lot of talk about the technologies to enable IP and optical convergence — such as timing-over-packet standards and cost-effective circuit emulation — that’s just part of the solution. Just as important are the operational aspects as we converge (or “packetize”) networks, but how are we going to manage them? Cyta Hellas Deploys Cisco Optical Solution for new High Speed Optical Network

Cyta Hellas, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Telecommunications Organization of Cyprus,  is the latest network operator to deploy Cisco’s Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transport solution for a new high-speed backbone. Cyta is the most recent service provider to be licensed in Greece, which is part of the mother company’s effort to expand to new markets. In almost six years, Cyta has achieved nearly 17% market share and is still growing, despite challenging economic conditions. Today, the company operates a network of over 5,000 km one of the largest privately owned fiber optic networks in Greece.
