Putting Cisco on the Map at ONS

ONS1When one of the oil and gas industry’s largest events needed a solution to save resources, time and money, they called Cisco. At the Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) conference, organizers wanted to find a way to eliminate the paper maps, guides and updates that needed to be printed for the over 90,000 attendees and 1,300 exhibitors participating at the event. Forgoing the printed material, ONS came up with the idea of a digital app to guide conference goers around their show.

With the help of Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences (CMX) ecosystem partner, MazeMap, ONS had the searchable and linkable maps it needed. With Cisco CMX Location Analytics, ONS identified and addressed congestion at the venue.

“Cisco CMX is a key component of our wayfinding solutions,” says Thomas Jelle, CEO at MazeMap. “Attendees can search for exhibitors on the ONS app and maps guide them to the booth they’re looking for.”

The next part of their solution was installing the hardware needed to make sure those maps made it to their attendees’ wireless devices. Using Cisco switches and wireless access points (APs) with integrated 802.11ac, ONS was able to provide their members with the ability to navigate the 40,000 square meters of conference space spread out over multiple buildings. Open Networking and SDN perspectives with Dr.Jim Metzler

As the hype cycle around aspects of  concepts like software-defined networking continue, customers are continuing to sift through and educate themselves to determine what is real and actionable.  I have had my fair share of participation in several events over the last 24 months,  and have been speaking to different audiences both gaining and sharing insights in the process.

One person I spoke with recently was Dr. Jim Metzler. We seem to be crossing paths at multiple venues including Interop, the Network World SDN roadshows currently underway in a few cities in the United States, as well, as at the Open Network Summit in Santa Clara a few weeks ago.

Jim has become the messiah of sorts, on some of these emerging technologies, and is frequently consulted – both as part of his day job at Ashton, Metzler and associates and during his role hosting various industry panels on these topics. I thought it would be good to host the host and get some of his perspectives here, as we both got together at the recently held Open Networking Summit at Santa Clara.

Cisco Optical Network System (ONS) listed on UC APL!

      • The Cisco ONS 15310-CL SONET Multiservice Platform is an economical, 1-rack unit (1RU)-high delivery platform optimized for use as the last network element—at the customer location (CL)—in a service provider’s network, or for use as an end node in enterprise or campus environments. The Cisco ONS 15310-CL takes advantage of the proven technology pioneered by the Cisco ONS 15454, the industry’s first and leading multiservice optical transport platform.
    • Cisco ONS 15310-Metro Access (MA) Rel. 9.2.1 TN 1023002, as a F-NE.
      • The Cisco ONS15310-MA is a carrier-class MSPP that efficiently switches Ethernet and TDM traffic for use in metropolitan and regional optical networks.       • The Cisco ONS 15454 SONET Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP) provides the functions of multiple network elements in a single platform. It supports common interfaces such as DS-1, DS-3, and EC-1 and data solutions including 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet solutions with OC-3 through OC-192 optical transport bit rates and integrated DWDM wavelengths.
    • Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP) Rel. 9.2.1 TN 10230047, as a F-NE.
      • The Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP) is the most deployed metropolitan-area (metro) and regional dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) solution in the world featuring two- through eight-degree reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology that enables wavelength provisioning across entire networks and eliminates the need for optical-to-electrical-to-optical (OEO) transponder conversions. The ONS 15454 MSTP interconnects with Layer-2, Layer-3 and storage area network (SAN) devices at rates up to 40 Gbps.
