Many of us are at Interop New York this week and we’re very excited. In New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg runs the entire city from an iPad. Tablets and smartphones enable new and innovative ways to engage employees, guests and customers; the technology tantalizes with the promise of business transformation. More organizations are allowing mobile and personal devices for work use. But there are also many challenges for IT during these technology transitions. IT is struggling to keep up with the latest mobility trends.
As you know, we first launched Cisco Unified Access about 3 months ago at Cisco Live in San Diego. Now at Interop New York, we are announcing a number of significant enhancements to the Cisco Unified Access solutions. Our enhanced solution enables IT to spend less time running the network and more time collaborating and innovating with the lines of business. One area in Microsoft’s new Windows Server 2012 operating system and cloud platform that has seen a lot of innovation is in networking.
Here, Cisco has been collaborating closely with Microsoft at the R&D level for some time on technical and product integration. We’ve got an upcoming webinar on Sept. 26 focusing on Windows Server 2012 and Virtual Networking. Cisco Nexus 1000V Product Manager Appaji Malla and Microsoft Networking MVP John Savill will be co-presenting.

For nearly everything that I do in college, I need access to the Internet: classes, studying, meetings, and, discussions. In class, I access lecture documents on Blackboard. In meetings, I review and send emails. Studying, I research topics online and download information from the library. Essentially, I’m connected to the network constantly, and to be successful, I have to have the ability to connect any time, from anywhere, on any one of my several devices.
As most CIO’s and IT professionals would agree, building a scalable and robust network is a thankless and daunting task. It’s even more difficult in colleges and universities, where enabling tens of thousands of students to quickly and safely access the network is a critical imperative. And if the equipment is unreliable, access is compromised. When this happens, the institution faces difficultly in implementing online teaching initiatives, costs can increase and ultimately, there may be a productivity decrease. Additionally, faculty and students can become disgruntled and unmotivated as a result of network complications.

I am happy to announce another Virtual Symposium, this time on the topic of virtual machine networking. We will be holding it on July 25th from 9am to 10am Pacifc Time.
Beyond our usual panel of Greg Ferro, Steven Foskett, Ivan Pepelnjak and yours truly, we will be joined on the panel by Marko Milivojevic (@icemarkom), David Davis (@davidmdavis) and perhaps a couple of other folks.
We have settled on the 60 min format. The panel will share some initial thoughts, but we will devote most of the time to answering questions from the audience, either through the WebEx Q&A tool or via the #VirtSyn tag.

Do you have an iPhone, Android, Samsung , or any other mobile phone? Not surprising since there will be 15 billion networked devices by 20151. With employees (yes, even IT themselves) bringing their mobile phones to work, businesses are seeing at least a doubling of mobile devices per employee; from laptop-only to laptop + mobile phone (+ tablet)2.
The IT department is faced with an increased burden on their existing wireless network, while securing email access from any platform and simultaneously ensuring an optimal, reliable user mobile experience. Offering a reliable, consistent user mobile experience used to be a luxury ask; today, it impacts employee productivity. Mobile employee productivity can range from wireless laptop access from conference rooms to roaming the within the building accessing corporate email from any mobile device. This is true for me (working at a large enterprise) and my husband (working at a medium-sized business).
