Empowering Global Problem Solvers at Cisco Live US 2015

Right now, nearly 16 billion people, processes, data, and things are connected to the Internet. By the time this blog post goes “live”, that number will have surely increased. And by 2020, there will be more than 50 billion connections, as the Internet of Everything becomes a reality and changes the world around us.

But what does this mean for you? To start, it means the jobs of today will become the jobs of yesterday – you’ll need new skills to thrive in the digital economy and stand out to employers looking to take advantage of the data created by billions of new connections. Cisco Welcomes Networking Academy NetRiders Winners to San Jose

Earlier today, students from 13 different countries met for the first time on Cisco’s San Jose campus. For some, like Odwa Yekela, the visit is a first adventure away from home in South Africa. For others, like Richard Brunner, it’s a simple two-hour drive from Sacramento, California. No matter where the 18 students came from, though, the visit is more than just a trip — it’s a life-changing experience and celebration of their achievement as global winners of the Cisco Networking Academy NetRiders Competition.

Cisco to Students: Technology Skills Can Set You Apart

“Follow your passion. You will shine when you truly love what you are doing.”

“Finish something, whether it is a degree or a certification. Nobody can ever take that away from you.”

“Be prepared and keep learning. When an opportunity comes you’ll be ready.”

This was just some of the advice and knowledge several hundred college students received from Cisco professionals during the first-ever Student Network Day at the Cisco Live customer education event in San Francisco today.

The event was designed to help students from the San Francisco Bay Area learn about technology trends and career options, and how technology skills can differentiate them no matter what career they choose. Some of the students take courses through Cisco Networking Academy, which trains people to design, build, maintain, and secure computer networks in partnership with community colleges, universities, and other organizations.

The day before her graduation from San Jose State University, Ellen Song attended Student Network Day at Cisco Live to learn more about the technology sector as a potential career path.

Networking Academy Competitions Help Students Stand Out

For students enrolled in Cisco Networking Academy courses, Networking Academy NetRiders Competitions are an amazing way to gain valuable hands-on experience, test their skills under pressure, and expand their network of professional connections. Most of all, winning NetRiders helps students stand out in the job market, as Jesús Israel Nava of Mexico and Csilla Bessenyei of Hungary found out.

Bob_SchoenherrBob Schoenherr is a designer, content developer, and technical lead for the competitions. “Apart from the hands-on practical experience, the competitive environment allows participants to go head to head against students from all over the world,” he says. “NetRiders and other skills competitions give students exposure for internships and career opportunities and offer contestants development growth potential in networking and IT skills that prove beneficial.”

Bob offers a bit of advice for students planning to participate. He recommends that students learn the materials, as opposed to memorizing the material: “The best way to learn concepts is to create scenarios to be solved and then solve them.”

Watch Bob’s video below for more insights on the benefits of participating in NetRiders.
