Next Gen IT Predictions: 2014 and Beyond

In my travels, I am fortunate to see new and interesting innovations, emerging technologies and trends. Of course, the growth of mobile and cloud technologies continues to shape our work and lives. 2014 will be a year that builds on the momentum of these trends, along with IoT, with more connected people, processes data and things than ever before.  Here’s my take on the most significant things we’ll see in 2014.

1. Increasing urgency to manage our zettabyte-driven world.

The proliferation of mobile devices, streaming video and explosion of applications has meant that global IP traffic has exploded more than 4x in the past 5 years. IP traffic will again triple over the next 5 years. In 2013, we generated a momentous 1.2 zettabytes of new information and 70 billion apps were downloaded. Wireless traffic will exceed wired traffic and video-on-demand traffic will nearly triple in three years.

The 802.11ac wireless networking standard is the most recent introduction by the IEEE (now ratified), and is rapidly becoming more accepted and reliable industry standard. The good news is that the client and vendor adoption rate for 802.11ac is growing at a much higher pace as compared to when 802.11n was introduced back in 2009. There has been an accelerated growth seen with the mobile and laptop devices entering the wireless market embedded with an 802.11ac WiFi chipset. Unlike in the past, laptop, smartphone and tablet manufacturers are now acknowledging the fact that staying up to date with the latest Wi-Fi standards is as important for the bandwidth hungry users as having a better camera or a higher resolution display.

With the launch of the new 802.11ac AP 3700, Cisco introduces the Cisco HDX (High Density Experience) Technology. Cisco HDX is a suite of solutions aimed towards augmenting the higher performance, more speed and better client connectivity that 802.11ac standard delivers today.

What Next for BYOD?

One of the interesting and challenging aspects of working in the Mobility space is the sheer pace at which the industry is moving.  I’m fortunate to work with many Customers in EMEA to help support and shape their strategy towards Mobile technology.  A great example of this has been the reaction to BYOD.

The influx of personal devices into the Enterprise caused by the BYOD trend poses numerous challenges to IT Departments.  Understandably, initial reaction was to focus on network and device level Security.

Cisco responded by introducing a BYOD Solution to remove some of the burden from IT Departments and provide them with a central point for managing many aspects of the BYOD lifecycle: onboarding, device profiling, authentication, authorization, offboarding and self-service management.

Providing corporate network access via mobile devices is nothing new to today’s IT administrators. However, the future of BYOD and mobility will change as rising generations expect and demand more seamless and secure connectivity.
