Cisco and SAP : State of the collaboration

May 16, 2012 at 6:30 am PST

The second day at SAPPHIRE 2012 has been as intense as the first day --  After interviewing one of the first UCS customer (Monsanto) about the deployment of SAP applications , I did a round of videos with EMC, NetApp and Cisco executives to measure our presence in this market and our collaboration with key players. Stay tuned for the videos on integrated stacks  (Vblock with EMC, Flexpod with NetApp) .

I met Cisco VP Marketing, Data Center and Cloud , Giuliano Di Vitantonio, who shared why Cisco is at Sapphire 2012 , and what specifically Cisco and SAP are working on together -- Legitimate questions from some of our visitors, as Cisco has a great image as a network provider, but is still building the recognition as a server and software powerhouse.  Take the time to watch this short video to appreciate the breadth of the collaboration and understand why SAP is so interested in deepening this partnership.

Talking about experts . If you are in Orlando today don’t forget

-To attend at 12:00 pm the speaking session from Michael Missbach , our head of the SAP Competence Center

Cisco at Sapphire 2012

May 15, 2012 at 5:46 am PST

A quick snapshot of @ciscodc at Sapphire -- As expected a lot of activities for this first day in Orlando.
On the front of the booth, we got a great audience as our speakers (see list of theater presentations) were covering numerous new capabilities developed by SAP and Cisco around intelligent automation, UCS , Flexpod or Vblock -- Well to be perfectly honest the Mini Cooper games were certainly very attractive as well -- Remember that you can participate to the contest through Twitter, even if you are not here in Orlando (see details here).

I spent part of my day videotaping partners and customers -- Great stories from SAP, Cisco and EMC customers such as Edison Mission Group, or from SAP, Cisco and NetApp (Flexpod) customers such as Chico State University -- “We reduce our footprint by 90% and have been able to move to a much better co-location facilities” ” Within 2 weeks, we were already up and running ” Expect to hear more from them in the following weeks as we will post these videos.

Today I want to highlight the presentation that Cisco Eric Robertson , will deliver at 12:00 pm [ Run Better 2 location] about Migration Path for Your Data Warehouse  (see abstract)  Eric spent a couple of minutes with me to reinforce in front of the camera the importance of this session, for SAP customers who are not on SAP BW7.3  , but want to take advantage right now of the SAP HANA environment . The Cisco solution is called Bridge Appliance and offers great potential -- Here is a 2mn summary from Eric

Citrix Synergy 2012 – Find out how Cisco and NetApp are accelerating Citrix XenDesktop

May 7, 2012 at 3:42 am PST

This week Cisco and NetApp will be at Citrix Synergy - So I asked  Abhinav Joshi, Sr Product Manager, Desktop Virtualization , NetApp to tell us more about NetApp participation, and what the collaboration between the 3 companies means for the customers.

I am honored to be a guest blogger on Cisco’s leading data center and cloud blog site. My name is Abhinav Joshi, and I am the Product Manager for Desktop Virtualization Solutions at NetApp with key focus on Citrix. I work very closely with Cisco and Citrix to jointly define, develop, and roll out innovative and cost effective desktop virtualization solutions and integrations e.g. the popular Citrix XenDesktop on FlexPod solution. Some of you may remember me from my previous life as a Cisco blogger on this site J

FlexPod, a data center platform jointly developed by Cisco and NetApp and delivered by 100s of channel partners has been accelerating private cloud adoption worldwide. In an year and a half since it was launched, FlexPod has grown to more than 850 customers and 500 partners worldwide.WOW!!!

I want to highlight that Desktop Virtualization on Citrix XenDesktop across various FlexCast delivery models has been one of the key customer initiatives driving the growth of FlexPod. Adoption of FlexPod at University of Tennessee and John Holland Group are some great examples of Why Citrix XenDesktop rocks on FlexPod. I wish I could list out all the deployments without getting into any trouble. J

Cisco, Citrix, NetApp and the World of Connected Devices…

April 18, 2012 at 9:30 am PST

Today’s Day 2 keynote at Microsoft’s Management Summit (MMS) here in Las Vegas focused on the world of connected devices and how IT organizations struggle at times to  deliver quality  services based on the demands of our anytime, anywhere, always on world.

One solution being demonstrated this week at MMS helps to resolve some of these issues. The Citrix XenDesktop on FlexPod with Microsoft Private Cloud solution is a joint effort between Cisco, Citrix, and NetApp in the Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) area. The solution helps to simplify, secure, and scale desktop virtualization on Cisco’s agile data center infrastructure based on Cisco UCS while also incorporating storage assets from NetApp and desktop assets from Citrix.  All based on a Windows Server, System Center (including support for System Center 2012!), and Hyper-V environment.

This combination of technologies from Cisco, Citrix, Microsoft, and NetApp has produced a highly efficient, robust and scalable Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) for a hosted virtual desktop deployment. To learn more details about this new offering, please download the publicly available reference architecture at the link below:

Cisco, NetApp Transform Data Centers, Bring Entry-Level FlexPods to the Masses

April 10, 2012 at 9:54 am PST

This is a guest blog post from John Woodall, Vice President of Engineering at Integrated Archive Systems, Cisco Premier and NetApp Star partner. John has more than 21 years of experience in the information technology industry. He joined IAS in 2002 as Sr. Infrastructure Architect and brings an extensive background in enterprise architecture, infrastructure, system design and large-scale, complex systems implementation. Recently, John was promoted to Vice President of Engineering, responsible for pre-sales technical architecture and professional services. Prior to joining IAS, John held architecture and management roles at Symantec, Solectron (now Flextronics), Madge Networks, and Elsevier MDL.

This is not supposed to be a blog per se on the cloud; we don’t need more of THAT!  The journey to the cloud, an overused and tired message in my opinion, is now more akin to transporter technology in Star Trek: You choose where to go and you can be there in a moment.  In a similar manner, choosing to put the cloud in your data center is something you and your customers can do now, no more journey to figure out.

Just do it. It really is that easy, a choice. The technology is mature. The tools work. The choice is yours…when the time is right for you and your customers.  This week, that timing just got better for a whole new set of organizations and customers with the announcement of Cisco and NetApp’s entry-level FlexPods.

The inevitability of the cloud, the relentless juggernaut of change in the data center, has been and is continuing to impact all of us in the industry--customers, suppliers, resellers, providers--none of us escapes the Borg-like assimilation that we face.

The challenge has been: how to do it and how much will it cost? How in the world can a data center be transformed?  How can our businesses derive the benefits and mitigate the risk of change?  Read More »
