Many of us will take a moment today – or even the entire day – to let the special women in our lives know how much they mean to us. This appreciation will likely come in the form of gifts or flowers, while others will simply send a card or make a phone call. But imagine how much more it would mean to that special lady who may not be able to spend the day with you in person to connect with you over video and see your smiling face.
As a mother of two, I find myself looking forward to this day every year. Why? This is the day where mothers from around the country get their much due recognition. It is a day where putting a personal touch on your communication is not only appreciated but deserved. Don’t believe me? These celebrities know what I’m talking about. They took the time to tell the world how their moms inspired them with a video message. How awesome is that?
I agree with this approach to Mother’s Day – use video! Forget a greeting card or phone call – not to say those aren’t better than completely forgetting – but it’s time to add a more personal element to Mother’s Day, and that’s what video does. So, from my kids to you, Happy Mother’s Day!
I’m sure moms everywhere will approve…I know I do!

This past weekend was Mother’s Day here in the United States, and being a mother of two high-tech savvy teenage children, I pondered what my kids has in store for me. I was surprised with the latest iPad! Eventually, I started asking myself: would Cisco allow me to use it for work?
Luckily, Cisco has a BYOD policy in place and a long-term vision for an Any Device, empowering our employees to use the device they want to be productive. For other working mothers who may have also gotten a new iPad or mobile device for Mother’s Day, what does your company say about using this new personal device? Will you “Lock It Up or Free It Up”? (a notion introduce at RSA conference this year). How will IT department respond to this request?
One of the biggest concerns folks have for BYOD is security. Just this past week, Cisco was showcasing our Secure BYOD solution at Interop, with the TechWiseTV folks sitting down with my colleague Bill McGee to help you answer the call of mobile devices on your corporate network. Take a look at the video for yourself, but blurring the lines between personal and corporate device doesn’t pose such a security challenge anymore. Related to this topic, we are holding a webcast May 16th focused on the Network Built for the Mobile Experience. You can join our CTO and SVP, Padmasree Warrior, along with stories from British Telecom and Eagle Investment on how they are transforming their workplace, and allowing their employees to work “Your Way” without compromising the business. For more details click here, and for those who want to continue this conversation–
Working Mothers: I would like to hear from you – did you get that new mobile device this Mother’s Day or do you already have a neat personal device – Do you bring it into work? Do you share it with your family?
IT departments: What is your BYOD policy is, and are you busy provisioning all those new mobile devices from this past weekend?

While children should honor and respect their mothers every day, most countries set aside one day out of the year to officially celebrate moms. This year, in the U.S., Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 8. We hope that you live near your mom, but if you don’t, Cisco ūmi can help you stay connected and now through May 21st, when you buy one ūmi, get one FREE!
Here are five ways to honor your mother via ūmi this Sunday:
- The courtesy of a call – Sometimes, all it takes to say “I love and care about you” is a phone call. With ūmi, you can do even better. We’re giving you the capability of video conferencing with your mom on the HDTV in your living room! Place a call out to her and show her that you care!
- Take her out to dinner – Even if you can’t be there in person to take your mom out to dinner, you can host a dinner via ūmi. Share the same recipe and wine selection, and enjoy a pleasant dinner while catching up on what’s new in your lives.
- It’s a generational thing – If you have children, invite them to sit down and chat with your mom. She’s a grandmother, too, and would love to see their smiling faces. Read More »
