Mobile Monetization Takes a Step Forward

Among the discussions we had with global Mobile Service Providers in Barcelona at MWC 2014, here’s something that was certainly NOT breaking news: in the face of relentless growth of mobile data usage (see Cisco VNI), a top imperative expressed was to drive profitability by monetizing new opportunities.

What’s unfortunate is that the challenges continue to grow. Over-the-Top (OTT) competition continues to preempt new Service Provider (SP) services initiatives. New revenue partnerships with OTT and Content Providers remain elusive. And SP’s see more and more new sources of services substitution challenging their legacy voice & messaging services, for example, the WhatsApp move into voice services.

Cisco CMX Analytics & Insights @ #MWC14

mwc3_1Today MWC 2014 came to a close in Barcelona having been another resoundingly successful event.

Mobile operators and Service Providers have displayed ever increasing interest in Monitization of their infrastructure especially via WiFi and Cisco’s CMX solution.

During the week I had many conversations with SP’s from across the world while very different geographies and facing different challenges, a common theme among the meetings was how can Cisco help us find ways to generate new revenue streams and new monetization models.

At MWC we showed various demos that show how this can be achieved and provide many interesting ideas to the customers to help them think about their own businesses and how they may be successfully applied.

One demo was how various components of Cisco’s SP Architecture can improve services and provide montitization opportunities to a fictitious hotel resort chain with wired and wireless small cells, SON &  Analytics all working together. Read More »

Cisco CMX & Monetization @ MWC 2014

mwc1_1Mobile World Congress 2014 continues this week in Barcelona with record attendances.

Many SP’s are exploring new ways to monetize their network investments, in an earlier posting some of these models were explored. Again this week these topics were again very much to the forefront with Service Providers actively discussing and exploring how to take the first steps to exploit this.

Summary: CIO Perspectives – Mobility, Customer Experience and the Road Ahead

Many business and IT leaders understand the current benefits of mobility, but some are still wondering what’s down the road and how the growing Internet of Everything (IoE) will impact the future of mobility and enhance tomorrow’s digital experience, for those both inside and outside of the workplace.

How can today’s CIOs be prepared to travel down the mobility road ahead? Here are three key points to consider:

1. Mobility is fueling the growth of the Internet of Everything.

We define the Internet of Everything as bringing people, process, data, and things together to make networked connections more relevant and valuable.  The concepts of mobility and IoE are not running parallel paths. 2. Mobility is driving a new customer experience.

In the coming years, we will continue to see the transformation from customer service to customer experience, both inside the workplace and with external customers. With increased mobility, it’s no longer enough to simply provide product information or the basic tools to get the job done. Employees and customers want more integration, more personalization and more context. Demand for this capability is setting the stage for tomorrow’s customers and employees, who will desire better integration of apps, content and context to make their decisions; both lifestyle and business decisions.

3. Mobility extends beyond traditional “carpeted office” applications.

Several years ago, the concept of BYOD and mobility might have been viewed as more easily deployed in traditional office settings. Today, mobility is significantly extending across the value chain. The results are driving more efficient organizations and industries built on the power of predictive context.
