Tropo Opens New Revenue Opportunities

As the need for constant connectedness and mobility explodes, it’s becoming increasingly clear the collaboration market is taking off. We’re in a race to transform the way we work and communicate. We’re talking about a $53 billion opportunity, and it’s just beginning.

Building on our March 17 announcement of Cisco Spark, on June 1, we made a huge leap forward with the official acquisition of Tropo, a team that has built one of the world’s leading open communication platforms.

Since then, I’ve been happy to see the analysts and other industry experts embracing this move.

As Zeus Kerravala, founder and principal analyst with ZK Research, put it, “The company’s calling card has been its ability to leverage smaller purchases. It drops the talent and technology into the Cisco machine, and gains a market-leading or sometimes market-defining position from it.” (May 7, 2015, No Jitter)

Zeus is right. Cisco Scores as Leader in the Infonetics Policy Management Scorecard

Last week, we were thrilled to receive the news that Infonetics scored Cisco Policy Suite as a Leader in the Policy Management Scorecard. Cisco was one of only two leaders recognized by Infonetics in this space and was recognized for building “… up its position in the market rapidly after its acquisition of BroadHop, demonstrating strong momentum around policy virtualization.”

The World is Flat, not a Flatscreen

I can’t deny it any longer. The apps on my mobile devices, and my social network living inside those apps, are influencing my behavior. In the case of disaster relief, at least, this influence is for the better.

While playing Words with Friends, I am asked to “Play to Help Nepal.” While paying my sister back for a Mother’s Day through Venmo, I notice my news feed has been taken over by @Possible (Possible Health).

“A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Kathmandu valley in Nepal. Donate $5 to Possible and help build back Nepal’s healthcare system relief efforts.

A few taps on the screen and I watch my money move, along with relief workers, aid, and social awareness.

Trading Mobile Dollars for IoT Pennies

Jeff Zucker of NBC Universal coined the prescient expression “Trading analogue dollars for digital pennies” in 2008 to describe the huge gap that he was observing between the lucrative promises of online and digital advertising and the reality of the meager revenues that it was in fact producing.  Could the same be true of the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution?  Are we trading the hundreds of dollars that we are generating from mobile users for the pennies that providers get for connecting “things”?

Connecting the 50 billion projected devices, or things, to the Internet is the cornerstone of the Internet of Things.  Given the challenges of remoteness, mobility and the cost of wiring up these devices, many of these connections will be made over mobile networks.  In fact, Beecham Research estimates that the number of cellular machine-to-machine connections will grow to 1 billion by 2020, up from 172 million in 2013.  It is no wonder that the mobile operators are salivating at the prospect of all this new revenue to be earned from connecting inanimate objects.  This windfall is especially at a time when there traditional mobile business is under attack.  Changes in voice usage and bundled minutes are causing voice revenues to decline and data revenues are under attack from Wi-Fi connections and over-the-top providers (see The Mobile Paradox). Observations from the NGMN 5G Industry Conference

Cisco asks the industry to think aggressively and to accept risks when it comes to 5G planning.

I was fortunate to attend the NGMN 5G Industry Conference in Frankfurt Germany March 24-25th. And while Frankfurt in March is a bit chilly for this Florida-boy, the conference was interesting and certainly well worth an investment of time. It was great to get together with over 300 people and to listen to a free exchange of ideas and views from the network operators, technology vendors and academia. Everyone was there for the common purpose to figure out what will 5G really be.

The NGMN is a network operator led organization that includes technology vendors and academia and takes an active role defining the requirements for next generation technology. They released their first of five white papers on 5G at this past MWC 2015.   This initial white paper focused on use cases that illustrate requirements needed in 5G.
