The Security Imperative As Mobility Evolves

A colleague of mine here at Cisco, Jonathan, recently spoke well to the Evolution of Cisco Mobility Workspace Journey. Like all technologies, there is an adoption and engagement cycle based on maturity and risk level. We begin at the device-focused phase with a simple “get me on the network.” Following is the application-focused phase, “now that I am on what can I do with my ability to move around without a wire and work anytime and anywhere.” And the final is the overall experience, which is tailored to the user based on who they are, where they are, what they need or can do. And one can argue the next mobility phase for organizations is IoT (Internet of Things) as more single purpose devices (not necessarily with a user behind it) move to the wireless network.

What is critical to point out is the consistent requirement (not a nice to have) for security as the mobile user experience expands. Why is this so important? According to IDC over 47 percent of organizations see security enhancements required with their mobility initiative. The questions to consider are:

  • What are the secure mobility issues today and potentially tomorrow?
  • What are the implications?
  • What is likelihood of these threats?

The top secure mobility concerns noted by numerous surveys indicate the following:

  1. Data protection
  2. Application access
  3. Lost and stolen device
  4. Rogue devices

Mobility Trends in the Air Industry 2014

Mobile usage and penetration within the Air Industry is an interesting topic that most of us can relate to and understand to one degree or another. Having attended the recent Air Passenger EXPO in Barcelona, some of the published reports make for interesting reading. Here are some interesting perspectives and trends:

Airline Perspective:

  • During the next 3 years, 98% of Airlines are investing in  delivering Passenger Services via Mobile devices
  • With 97% investing in Personalization of services to customers
  • And 94% planning on delivering Customer Services via social media.

Wireless penetration onboard is growing.

  • with 55% of Airlines planning investing in wireless for passengers and 69% investing in wireless for crew usage. Read More »

Increasing Demand for Higher Location Data Resolution

Cisco has been playing a critical part for retail, healthcare, hospitality and transportation organizations to gain an understanding of how end-users move throughout an organization’s physical location. This is done through our Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences (CMX) solution.

With all the valuable information CMX provides, the demand for even more accurate data has been growing. Location accuracy has been a hot developing field and, as I mentioned in announcing our Best of Interop Finalist status in the wireless category last week, Cisco’s taken the lead in redefining how this location-based data is acquired.

In the past many solutions have relied on the probing performed by the mobile device to acquire location-based data.  In recent months this approach has shown diminishing returns. The underlying issue is that this data is reliant on how frequently the mobile device probes an access point. A couple issues that arise include:

–       Mobile device manufacturers are reducing the frequency of device probing to conserve battery. This reduces the number of data points collected and impacts the accuracy of the data

–       Different manufacturers probe the access point with varying frequency so some devices deliver more accurate information than others skewing the location analytics data.

At Cisco’s annual Partner Summit event we are revealing some key areas of focus for the upcoming Cisco v8.0 release. Although the list is not inclusive of all new functionality, I would like to highlight some steps we are taking to bring CMX to meet the ever-evolving demand for location-based data.

Enabling the next wave of hyper-context aware mobile experiences: Cisco Enterprise Mobility Services Platform (EMSP)

AN52162-2 v2The profound impact mobile devices has had on IT over the last decade is undeniable. Many can argue is it the largest of the four forces driving the next evolution of IT: Social, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud (SMAC).  It’s hard to imagine the pace of social network evolution without mobile devices. Or the mass migration to cloud without the ‘App revolution.’ Our mobile devices are the critical ‘sensors’ driving the mass movement of big data and analytics, quickly evolving to connected things, the ‘Internet of Everything.’

With the advancement of ‘IoE,’ the next wave of mobile applications is upon us.  The days of on-demand, ‘client-pull’ information is becoming legacy.
