Good News Keep Coming on the Mobility Front

Recently I shared with you an ACG Research report which shows Cisco leading in Mobile IP Infrastructure and gaining market share.

Now step with me into the future for a moment and picture this.

2018 -- nearly 21 billion globally networked devices and connections are live, 7.3 billion M2M are online, four billion global Internet users are connected, and IP video  represents 79 percent of all Internet traffic. According to a recent Cisco Visual Networking Index study, this is a mere glimpse of the future. And who is at the heart of enabling all of this? You’re right, mobile service providers.

The next thing you will want to know is what puts them in this sweet spot. Capturing  the opportunities afforded by everything going mobile is not easy. Yet service providers alerted at this high-stakes business promise of the future are racing to set themselves up with the means to leverage it. They are employing an architectural approach to their networks that will allow them a couple of things; apply Read More »

Great News, Cisco gains market share in Mobility

Get this.

The average consumer is never more than 3 feet away from their phone. The average smart phone user checks their phone 40 times a day. Mobility has become a necessary part of our lives and will be even more so with the emergence of the Internet of Everything, which will bring together people, processes, data and things. And this is not reflected only in stats that abound around the Internet but also in analysts firms’ research findings.

In a hot-off-the-press report, ACG Research’s Ray Mota notes that  a major paradigm shift is happening. ”Although service providers are requesting that vendors extend consumption model of their financing, we are seeing a major CAPEX spending shift from wireline to wireless. Mobile spending continues to rise globally, fueling LTE spending. EPC will continue to be a highly dynamic market for the next several years as vendors and carriers work through network virtualization. We saw a major shift in market shares in 1Q14 because of vendors’ execution and the flexibility of their portfolios.

The market share vendor break down in the ACG report shows Cisco as #1 in Mobile IP Infrastructure including #1 in Packet Core (MPC & EPC)., #1 in Mobile Backhaul, and #1 Mobile IP Core.

This past quarter we gained market share with Read More »

A Lifeboat For The iPhone Flood. Cisco ASR 901

4G mobile Internet is back in the news with word that Apple has sold over 5 million LTE-enabled iPhone 5s in the first three days it went on sale, and I know that my wife is counting down the hours until she is eligible for an upgrade (likely my two-year old daughter too… if she could talk.  Have you seen how kids naturally master an iPhone like Ronaldhino and soccer ball?).

Whether it’s for uploading pictures of the kids to social media sites or getting work done faster, over 100 million smartphone users will belong to the “gigabyte club” (over 1 GB per month) in 2012 according to the Cisco Visual Networking Index. However Read More »

Measuring Cisco’s Ascendance in the Mobile Market

There is now dramatic evidence that Cisco’s focus on intelligent, efficient, end-to-end services via the IP network is transforming the mobile vendor landscape.  As mobile operators shift more of their expenditures from the RAN to the packet core to unleash innovative new services and to IP backhaul to more efficiently and economically offload data traffic, Cisco is becoming the vendor of choice.

Numbers Tell the Story

According to the Q3 2011 Worldwide Mobile IP Infrastructure report just published by ACG Research, mobile operators in large numbers are embracing the shift from radio-centric to IP-centric investments. That conclusion is based on these findings:

  • Quarterly segment revenue has nearly doubled in three years: Since 2008, the worldwide mobile IP infrastructure market (mobile IP backbone, mobile IP backhaul, and packet core) has gone from $550 million in the first quarter of 2008 to more than $1 billion in the third quarter of 2011
  • Brisk year-over-year growth: The total mobile IP infrastructure market grew 14% year over year -- Q3 2011 vs. Q3 2010. This includes 10% growth in infrastructure for mobile IP backbone, 10% growth in infrastructure for mobile IP backhaul routing and switching, and 20% growth in infrastructure for packet core (which includes Mobile Packet Core covering 2G and 3G and Evolved Packet Core covering 4G) Read More »
