We are here in Charlotte this week with our Cisco friends, with the opportunity to talk with all sorts of like-minded Microsoft SQL Server individuals at the 2013 SQL PASS Summit. The conversations vary in range from things like database performance, developer issues, to private cloud and data management concerns. We’ve also had some good chats with a few data warehouse folks, which prompted me to share some thoughts on this topic.
We know that the data warehouse (DW) is central to a comprehensive business intelligence (BI) solution. So clearly, if our DW isn’t up to snuff, as they say, then we can forget about delivering critical analytics to a growing number of LOB managers and execs. This, in turn, negatively affects the bottom line of the business, which isn’t good for anyone. And it isn’t getting any easier. Data is growing exponentially and the problem of integrating data from multiple sources isn’t going away any time soon. These issues, along with the complex interaction of the different components of a BI solution, continue to make the design, deployment and management of data warehouses a challenge. Now you can continue to throw money at it by over-provisioning and burning up valuable data center space and power to try to keep up, or you can strive to achieve a higher level of DW nirvana with Cisco and NetApp.

Today as a world-wide launch sponsor Cisco participated in Microsoft’s SQL Server 2012 U.S. Symposium Event “The New World of Data” here in Orlando. The event, held before the start of the big Tech Ed North America show focused, on the new SQL Server 2012 release and its capabilities for supporting data management and business intelligence scenarios.
Cisco has invested with our storage partners EMC and NetApp in key SQL Server solutions offered through our Cisco Validated Design (CVD) program. Based on Cisco UCS for the compute platform and Nexus for the network platform, the CVDs support various SQL Server scenarios such as OLTP, Data Warehouse, and SQL Server consolidations (this is provided through assessment programs available through the Cisco Field).
For those of you attending Tech Ed this week in Orlando, please feel free to drop our Cisco booth, #1613. We’ll have technology demonstrations on: Cisco UCS, UCS Manager, VDI, and Nexus 1000V. Also, register for a chance to win one of our daily prizes – a trip to live life in the fast lane…so to speak… at the Exotic Driving Experience at Walt Disney World!

Microsoft TechEd 2011 was a great opportunity to talk to customers about Cisco UCS and Microsoft applications. We had so many attendees come by the booth and ask questions about UCS that we meet out target goal of customer engagments within the first two days. I was surprised how many people did not realize the depth of the platform or the integration points we provide from both an application and consolidation standpoint.

I am happy to share that Cisco today announced the participation and availability of the SQL Server 2008 R2 Data Warehouse solutions as part of the Microsoft SQL Server Fast Track 3.0 program. This solution is designed to accelerate the consideration and adoption of data warehouse solutions based on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.
Over the last few months, we’ve worked very closely with Microsoft and our storage partners EMC and NetApp to develop the enabling reference architectures. These reference architectures will be published shorty, comprising of the fast growing Cisco UCS C-Series Servers, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, SQL Server 2008 R2, and choice of EMC VNX or NetApp FAS as the storage component of the solution.
