10 Cool Mobile Apps from Cisco You Don’t Know But Should

April 18, 2014 at 4:40 pm PST

How many apps do you have on your mobile phone or tablet? Too many? Do you use all of them? If you do, you’re in the minority. 22% of people use an app only once after they have downloaded it, according to a study by Localytics.

iPhone Apps

My own iPhone is full of apps,  some of which I rarely use — but also some tremendously valuable apps that I use multiple times daily.

When apps first came out, we all rushed to download as many as we could, to see what they did. Alas, many of them were ‘duds’ from the start, or lost value over time, so we abandoned them rather quickly.

Companies did the same. They (we) built plenty of apps, perhaps to experiment or capture a new capability, or to address a new audience or market segment. Cisco built more than 120 customer-facing apps and more that 50 apps for employee self-service. [That's too many!] Some of those apps were light on features, some were initially great but were later superseded by better apps, and some stand out for the recurring value they create.

Nevertheless, everyone is fighting for space on your device with the latest app and features.

I try to update my apps on a regular basis and remove any that I haven’t used in a while just to eliminate the noise and clutter on my device so I’m not scrolling through unused apps.

Cisco has quite a few great apps – below are 10 cool apps that I think you should consider downloading:

Digital Technology and the Olympics: When Is it Cheating?

February 6, 2014 at 5:20 pm PST

We all know how close we are to our mobile devices and digital technology, and how much we rely on these new tools – 87% of us use our mobile device while on the go and 81% of users read email on their mobile – and all of us use some combination of the web, mobile, video, social media, computing power, collaboration tools, and digital networks in our daily business lives.

We take advantage of advanced digital technologies for efficiency, effectiveness, and loftier performance in business, so why wouldn’t an athlete use these technologies to their advantage while in training or on the field of athletic competition?

  • football helmetNFL quarterbacks have in-helmet speakers and microphones to get plays called-in from the coaches on the sidelines (as noted by the green sticker on the back of the helmet).
  • The America’s Cup racing teams go to elaborate measures and spend incredible sums of money to hone their boat hull technologies for competitive advantage.
  • Better strength-training machines (and outlawed performance-enhancing drug cocktails) optimize the human body for maximum performance.
  • Special fabric technologies reduce wind- and water-drag for a few hundredths-of-a-second advantage in skiing and swimming competitions.

The examples are all around us, in virtually every sport or game, including the university-level, professional, and the Olympics. Read More »

It’s Not Too Late: Make Your ‘Digital Resolutions’ for the New Year

January 21, 2014 at 3:56 pm PST

2014Approximately 45% of us make New Year’s Resolutions according to research by the University of Scranton. Among the top ten resolutions for 2014 are:

  • stay fit and healthy,
  • spend less and save more,
  • learn something exciting, and
  • spend more time with family.

Good luck with that…

We all start with good intentions in January, but often lose momentum by the end of the month with only 8% of us achieving our resolution during the year. I admit to invariably occupying the category of the underperforming 92%.

Digital Philanthropy – How Are You Giving this Holiday Season?

December 23, 2013 at 4:01 pm PST

It’s the holiday season, and ’tis the season for giving!

Since one-third of donations occur in the month of December (source: Network for Good, Chronicle of Philanthropy), digital plays an increasing role in expanding the reach of requests for donations, in creating a propensity to give, and in delivering connected experiences that even themselves provide community benefit.

Known as ‘digital philanthropy,’ more and more donations are digital and utilizing mobile, social media, web and video. Growth of online donating has increased to 11.8% year-over-year, while overall giving increased 3.8% (source: Blackbaud, Charitable Giving Report: How Nonprofit Fundraising Performed in 2012, February 2013).

Donations come in all sizes and packages. The one we often hear about most is donating money  via text message. To donate for typhoon relief in the Philippines via the Salvation Army, for example, all you need to do is text TYPHOON to 80888. And with just a click or two you’ve made a contribution. Quick, simple and immediate.

Digital Transformation: Is Your Company Making the Pivot?

December 18, 2013 at 4:24 pm PST

80% of survey respondents [administered by MIT/Sloan and Cap Gemini] believe that their companies need to go through a significant digital transformation. However, 63% of those respondents also believe that their current pace is too slow.

Sound familiar? Is your company moving too slowly? Are you moving at all?

I heard these stats while attending the recent Digital Leaders Summit in San Francisco. Aimed at those responsible for guiding their enterprises into the new digital future, the summit highlighted trends, best practices and case studies from a number of media and other companies including leaders from The New York Times, The Economist, Turner Broadcasting, Jump Associates, Coca-Cola, The LA Times, Politico, and others.
