IoT Meets Standards, Driving Interoperability and Adoption

For years, industrial control systems have been characterized by proprietary devices, protocols, communications, and applications. However, at the Hannover Fair last spring, virtually every exhibitor showed products that support IP, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi interfaces—something that would have been unthinkable just a decade ago.

The Internet of Everything (IoE) is driving this change, with an exponentially growing number of connections among people, process, data, and things. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a key enabler of this evolution. By 2020, according to Cisco’s analysis, there will be 50 billion connected devices—all needing a common way to work together.

IT Is from Venus, OT Is from Mars

Bringing Alien Worlds Together in the Internet of Things

In the 1990s, I, like millions of others, read the book Women Are from Venus, Men Are from Mars. This best-seller suggested that the frequent misunderstandings between genders make it seem as though men and women are from different, alien worlds. But it’s not just men and women who appear to be from different planets. Today, every organization that has begun an Internet of Things (IoT) deployment is bumping up against a fundamental disconnect between information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT). In many cases, these two groups are alien to one another—with separate technology stacks, network architectures, protocols, standards, governance models, and organizations.

In the first wave of the Internet, data and technology systems fell solidly in the realm of IT. IT systems focused on the flow of data across an organization, and with a few exceptions, did not get involved in production and logistics environments.

However, in many companies, a parallel organization—commonly called operational technology —has grown up to monitor and control devices and processes that act in real time on physical operational systems, such as assembly lines, electricity distribution networks, oil production facilities, and a host of others. What’s on Cisco’s Technology Radar? Predictions for 2014 and Beyond

Will an ‘Internet of Everything’ shorten your commute in the morning? Are we at the beginning or the end of the SDN hype cycle? What exactly is ‘context aware’ computing? How will large format HDTV technology transform the way global teams work together? 

Just before the holidays, I had the pleasure of posing these and other questions to a distinguished panel of Cisco engineers, innovators and business leaders.

Susie Wee, VP and CTO, Networked Experiences, Lauren Cooney, Senior Director, Software Strategy , CTO and Architecture Office, David Ward, CTO of Engineering and Chief Architect and Maciej Kranz, VP of the Corporate Technology Group led a discussion inspired by the work of Cisco’s Technology Radar team.

Cisco’s Tech Radar brings together a network of 80+ scouts  to identify emerging technology trends and forecast their impact on business, governments, and everyday society through a five, ten and twenty-five years time frame. The findings inform Cisco’s engineering and corporate development strategy.

Security, IoT and Risk Management for Industrial Networking

Isn’t it great to meet your respected peers all in one place to share ideas on improving industrial business performance?

Executives, engineers, developers and analysts did just that at the ARC World Industry Forum in Orlando recently.  And Cisco representatives were there to discuss the challenges and rewards of networking in industrial environments. Here is a summary on forum discussions specific to cyber security, the Internet of Things and risk management.

Brian Uffelman is a Security Solutions Architect for the Cisco Connected Industries Group.  In this video Brian summarizes his talk on securing the end-to-end (Plant-to-Business) network from internal network threats.  Brian speaks of the benefits of a complete security architecture that starts in the DMZ to keep threats out of the network and extends security all the way to the individual production user. Initial impressions of the Cisco Industrial Smart Solution at ARC Forum

In Monday’s blog, Maciej Kranz, Cisco VP/GM for the Connected Industries Group introduced the Cisco Industrial Smart Solution which converges factory automation, control systems and enterprise business systems onto a common, standards-based IP network.

Yesterday, Maciej and many others wrapped up the second of four days at the ARC World Industry Forum, discussing processes and technologies that enable breakthrough performances in industry and infrastructure.

Some Cisco team members shared their perspectives on the Cisco Industrial Smart Solution, how it effects industrial performance, and how it’s being received here at the ARC Forum.

“IT & OT convergence is helping industrial companies meet the primary business goal of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). A converged network will allow for faster fixes, better monitoring, and easier access to remote partners, employees and expert resources.  Standardizing on Ethernet enables rapid network deployment and a less expensive total cost of network ownership.

The keynote topic here at the forum was about achieving breakthrough performance.  The Internet of Things (IoT) was recognized as a top trend that’s having positive effects on manufacturing and automation and even on society.
