In the last MSE blog, Reddy Babu talked about the new Location Aware Guest Captive Portal powered by the Mobility Services Engine (MSE). The MSE was first introduced to provide location based information as a core service to the network, but has since built out a suite of location-based services that take the location-based data from the wireless network to the next level. These services are collectively known as the Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences (CMX) solution. As you read in Dr. Brendan O’Brien’s blog last week, we have been introducing more and more features to the CMX solution.
Today I will expand on one of these new features offered by the Connected Mobile Experiences solution: Browser Engage – which is our new network based location and context aware orchestration platform.
Browser Engage allows organizations to customize the web browsing experience for mobile users in their venue by offering various context-aware value added services. These services, such as indoor navigation and search, are available to the mobile user throughout their mobile web browsing experience. Browser Engage also helps organizations setup their content and serve them to the users based on device location. For example, an organization can deliver coupons or deals to mobile users based on their location within the venue—making the offerings much more relevant to the mobile end user. Imagine yourself in a mall and a deal shows up on your phone right around lunchtime that is valid at a food court right around the corner.

Big data seems to be everywhere these days. Everywhere you look there are new companies and technologies that promise to crunch up enormous databases and instantly extract from them knowledge and understanding. Although that sounds impressive, it raises the question – how can that help me and my business? How does fitting an N degree polynomial to a CRM database help me grow my business?
At Cisco, we’ve taken a very practical approach to big data. We started by asking our customers: what do they want to know? What information would help our customers’ better manage their sites, optimize their operations and grow their business? We took those questions and built Connected Mobile Experiences (CMX) Analytics around them.
Wouldn’t a store manager want to know how many of his customers were new? Did that new marketing campaign launched last month really drive new visitors to the store? Or another example, let’s say the layout of the store was just changed, wouldn’t the manager want to know if it was effective? Did people spend more time in the store? How about better understanding your customer base? Which web sites do my visitors visits? And of course retail isn’t the only segment that would like to know things. In order to make the data easier to visualize, we have recently enhanced our user interface adding many features that help users immediately and intuitively grasp the data. Our new dashboard enables every user to customize the views they wish to see and prioritize which data is meaningful to them. Our new Path engine enables customers to visualize how many people walk through the different paths in their venue. Our new reports can tell our customers everything from how many people are using their Wi-Fi to which floor people spend the most time in. How Interference Affects Your WiFi
802.11 devices operate in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz unlicensed bands. These are unregulated and experimental bands. As such, there are way more non-802.11 devices, including but not limited to cordless phones, video cameras, microwave ovens, Bluetooth headsets, DECT phones and even X-Boxes. Now even more devices are coming out that emit in these bands. These devices interfere with your WiFi network since they don’t work cooperatively with 802.11 devices, causing reduced network capacity and coverage, poor quality of voice and video, and link failures.
When an 802.11 device is ready to transmit and it senses interference, it will hold off transmission until it is finished. If it is in the middle of a transmission where it has sent a packet and never receives an acknowledgement, then it will try to send the packet again. Issues like these impact the throughput and capacity of your Wireless Network. An interferer like a microwave oven, which emits interference on a 50% Duty Cycle, will reduce the throughput by 50 percent. In the case of an interferer like a video camera, which emits interference at 100% Duty Cycle, when seen at Access Point above CCA threshold will stop the Access Point from beaconing.
