Cisco and OpenStack

A few months back, Cisco announced our official support for the OpenStack open-source project. Led by Cisco’s office of the Cloud CTO (Lew Tucker), Cisco continues to expand our engagement in this community.

Our initial engagement was a “Network as a Service” (NaaS) submission, looking at ways to create a logical abstraction to automate pools (or containers) of network resources and allow developers to create systems that meet their application needs.

Last week we co-sponsored the OpenStack Design Conference in Santa Clara (all presentations). We also created this  resource page to highlight configurations for developers or systems integrators looking to setup OpenStack on the Cisco UCS platform. Recaps of the Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4 events and activities.

Got C(lew)d? – Cloud CTO Lew Tucker & Cisco Cloud Strategy

To paraphrase a classic old song, “Cloud, cloud, everywhere it’s cloud, blocking out the scenery breaking my mind…”

Yep, cloud computing is anywhere and everywhere these days. The market is getting more competitive in delivering ways for customers to enable cloud computing for their business, and vendors are bombarding those customers with cloud messages from every angle. While Cisco has been extremely active in the cloud computing space for many years, we’ve heard from our customers that we need to move above the noise and be very prescriptive in articulating our cloud computing vision, strategy, portfolio and differentiation.

About six months ago Cisco announced that we had hired and appointed Lew Tucker as Cloud CTO. Not only does Lew bring a tremendous wealth of experience building some of foundational technologies and implementations of cloud computing, but he brings a unique way of explaining where cloud is going. The short video below introduces Lew’s approach to Cisco’s cloud strategy and vision. So get cLewd into Cloud as Lew clues you in on where Cisco is going in this rapidly growing market transition.

The Truth about Cloud Computing: It’s (Mostly) Just Networking!

You might have seen Lew Tucker, Cisco’s new Cloud Computing CTO, in the press this week discussing Cisco’s Cloud computing strategy and offerings.

Lew has been telling a pretty simple story since he came to Cisco earlier this year: cloud computing may be the latest term describing how the Internet is enabling new IT and business models, but if there’s one company that already understands how the Internet changes business models, it’s Cisco.

Yes, Cloud computing is a little different to Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. The proliferation of smarter mobile devices, the explosion of rich media and social applications and the expectation of users to be able to access content anywhere and anytime are newer trends that weren’t around in previous eras, but they simply reinforce something that has been true for more than a decade: the network has become the most important technology in advancing new computing paradigms.
