The Software Defined Networking (SDN) market evolution is having a major effect on networking job roles. New careers in IT are being built, focusing more on complex services and architectures rather than systems.
A recent survey by Cisco found that 71 percent of IT professionals intend on using SDN technology this year for a number of reasons, ranging from creating more programmable networks to simply reducing costs.
With these shifts in mind, new talent needs arise for IT professionals to accommodate evolving industry job roles.
Through the years, market transitions and technology disruptions have introduced IT knowledge gaps. Knowledge of networking fundamentals is no longer enough. Now, network professionals must understand networking systems with integrated security, wireless and voice capabilities. Cisco is leading the charge to provide direction and proper learning paths and resources to help address these challenges.
Listening to our community, we’ve determined new skills and job roles require a deeper understanding of deployments and troubleshooting of SDN architectures, as well as familiarity with SDN specific troubleshooting tools.
Just as we have been all along, Learning@Cisco is investing heavily in creating education and certifications programs to help our community evolve skills in order to continue to be the driving force of innovation in networking.

On April 10th I had the privilege to deliver, via TelePresence, the keynote address for the Swiss eLearning Conference 2013 (SeLC) in Zurich. Aimed at the Swiss professional learning community, the event was themed “Educate Your Customer” with a focus on e-learning, online training and augmented reality. I enjoy engaging with forward-thinking educators who share my passion for creating new paths to learning.
In my keynote, I described Learning@Cisco’s innovative approach to creating the next generation of IT talent. The fact is that the industry is experiencing an IT networking skills gap at the very same time the world is approaching the Internet of Everything and the prospect of 50 billion connected devices by the year 2020.
To help bridge this divide, Cisco has pioneered the use of virtual classrooms, social networking, games, and other resources to democratize learning via our social learning network. We bring together groups and individuals across the globe to learn from each other about IT networking in ways that augment traditional classrooms. Our goal is to remove barriers to learning and assist our partners and customers with developing the right networking talent to run their businesses.
Thousands of U.S. military personnel who have risked their lives in war have built technical, leadership and other skills while abroad. Despite risking life and limb, finding employment is a battle they’re often not prepared to fight alone. The realities of seeking employment that set in when veterans return stateside can be daunting.
That’s why today we are joining forces with The White House, North Carolina-based Futures Inc., and key learning partners to aid veterans and service members who are transitioning out of the military.
Both Cisco and Futures Inc. are playing key roles in the pilot announced today with The White House directed at pairing transitioning military with high-demand IT jobs. We are honored to assume the lead in rallying the IT sector behind the initiative, known as the IT Training and Certification Pilot. This program takes advantage of Cisco’s WebEx collaboration technology to enable service members to participate in virtual interviews and leverage its partner network to provide opportunities for training, networking and successful new careers.
In an effort to leverage the unique skills, experience, and qualifications that military personnel hold, we are working with our partners Global Knowledge to deliver ANSI-accredited Cisco Training and Pearson VUE to provide the corresponding Cisco certifications that will allow transitioning military personnel to prepare for Cisco CCNA® certification exams and other globally recognized industry certifications for participants. Through the opportunities provided by the training program, participants will receive fast track training and IT certifications that will help address the nation’s workforce gap in IT jobs. We are delighted to be one of several IT companies working with U.S. channel partners and suppliers encouraging them to hire and train veterans.

The Cisco Global Cloud Index reports that annual global data center IP traffic will reach 6.6 zettabytes by the end of 2016 at a compound annual growth rate of 31 percent. The growth of data and these new technologies impacts not only IT systems and infrastructures, but also the professionals that design, install, operate and manage them. Job roles are transforming more quickly in the data center than any other space in IT.
To meet the need for a comprehensive, job-role-focused training and certification program that allows customers and partners to optimize their IT infrastructure, Cisco today announced a Career Certification portfolio consisting of the Cisco CCNA® Data Center and CCNP® Data Center, as well as a robust product training portfolio.
Following the March 2012 announcement of CCIE Data Center, and the recently introduced suite of Nexus 1000v, 2000/5000, 7000, MDS and UCS product training, Cisco now offers a complete portfolio of Data Center training and certification, from the associate to expert level. For the first time, two key pillars of the Unified Cisco Data Center architecture: Cisco Unified Computing and Cisco Unified Fabric are covered across the job roles of design, implementation and troubleshooting.

Networking is predicted to become the second fastest growing occupation in the U.S., faster than the average for all occupations, and should continue to grow as we invest in new, quicker technology and mobile networks. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for network administrators, network support specialists and computer network architects alone is projected to grow by more than 20 percent by 2018.
