Statement of John Chambers on Funding for the E-Rate Program

November 17, 2014 at 9:57 am PST

Statement from Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers:

U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler today unveiled a landmark proposal that has the power to transform our nation’s classrooms and put the power of the Internet at the fingertips of all teachers and students.

Connecting students and teachers in the classroom is one of the most important things that our nation can do to dramatically improve our educational system. Connected classrooms will provide students with real-time access to the world’s libraries, incredible science experiments, and a wealth of video, apps and other rich media content.  It also will connect students in rural areas, as well as enable students to take innovative and specialized courses at other schools and other districts.

The effects of this decision will be felt for decades. Not only will it encourage more students to enter the fields that make up STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math — but it will also help make our students and our nation more competitive on the global stage. The nations that are on the leading edge of the digital revolution will be the ones that lead in terms of innovation, job creation and economic growth.

The E-Rate program forms the bedrock of the federal government’s effort to connect our nation’s schools and libraries to the Internet. This proposal, if adopted, will breathe new life into the program and will help our children and grandchildren prepare for an ‘Internet of Everything’ future where technology is integrated into all aspects of work, life, and education.

Cisco CEO John Chambers Statement on Marc Benioff

September 12, 2014 at 2:30 pm PST

Today, Cisco filed an 8K with the SEC on our board of directors composition which stated the following:

“The Board of Directors (the “Board”) of Cisco Systems, Inc. (“Cisco”), upon recommendation by the Nomination and Governance Committee of the Board, has nominated each of the current directors for election, and each has decided to stand for re-election at the 2014 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, with the exception of Marc Benioff, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of salesforce.com, inc., who on September 8, 2014 had notified Cisco and its Board of his decision not to stand for re-election at the 2014 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The Board has reduced the size of the Board to ten members effective at the time of the 2014 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.  Mr. Benioff will continue to serve as a director until Cisco’s 2014 Annual Meeting of Shareholders to be held on November 20, 2014.”

Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers offers the following statement:

“I am extremely thankful for Marc’s service to Cisco, especially as his own company is currently enjoying hyper growth and the demands on him are enormous. His infectious passion and guiding vision are crucial for Salesforce.com. I personally asked him to join the Board as I knew that his laser focus on customers would help Cisco as we navigate through the many market transitions of cloud, mobility, security, Internet of Everything and more. His insight, experience and knowledge in software and the cloud has been invaluable to Cisco. His focus on innovation, customers and outcomes during his time on the board will continue to have positive impact on Cisco for years to come. I thank Marc for his exemplary service, and am glad he’ll be with us through November, and look forward to continuing the close relationship between Cisco and Salesforce.”

An Update on Recent Industry Events and IoT in Manufacturing

It has been a crazy past three weeks with IoT and IoE for myself and also Cisco.  We recently hosted Cisco Live where we had over 25,000 attendees onsite and over 200,000 more attend virtually.  By the end of that week, I felt I had met each and every one and had at least a 15 minute conversation with them.  The buzz is there and our customers are telling us we are aligned to tackle this market and make IoT  in manufacturing take off.  Aside from our customers, I also had the pleasure to talk with leading industry and manufacturing analysts on our vision of IoT as well as various customer projects.  Here’s what one leading analyst blogged about right after CiscoLive:

“…current plant networks are like spangled spaghetti, which Cisco is attempting to untangle it based on its powerful networking routers and switches in a secure, simple and an effective way. The converged platform approach solves flexibility, scalability and responsiveness challenges of end-users. At a juncture, wherein customers across industry verticals are looking at standardization and standards-driven manufacturing, Cisco clearly has cracked the code with this platform approach.”  -
