Fellow Cisco IT Blogger, Aaron Chiles, and I had the great fortune to attend the Internet Summit in Downtown Raleigh last week. For those of you unfamiliar with the awesomeness that is the East Coast and thus the Internet Summit – it is “the Southeast’s largest gathering of digital minds – 2,000 innovators, senior marketers, entrepreneurs, and technology professionals.”
With keynotes and sessions given by leaders in the social media industry like Gary Vaynerchuk (CEO, Vayner Media), Alexis Ohanian (Co-founder, reddit), Ben Huh (Founder, Cheezburger) – it is safe to say that we learned quite a bit about content marketing, innovative story telling, and winning with social media.

It’s a noisy world we live in where information is flying at you from every direction. @GaryVee had a lot to say about getting your story out to the masses. His biggest advice? Be Innovative. Go where the traffic is
4. Privacy Isn’t a “Thing” Anymore
Did anyone reading ever say “I’ll never buy anything with my credit card online, ever!” – I know I did. Once. But then I did, and it was the most glorious thing ever. Now Amazon saves my credit card information, making it simpler for me to make quick purchases. I win because I save time. They win, because I’m more likely to make purchases.
3. Work is Not a Place
I think we can all agree that we were already aware of this. With mobility, smart phones, and now tablets taking the consumer market by storm, the way people engage and “work” is completely changing. It’s no longer a “work-life balance”. Now it’s all about integration.
2. Be Human
We are all human. We all make mistakes. Social Media, Blogging, Branding aren’t about perfection, they’re about aligning with your stakeholders.

There was a point in time when classrooms had one, maybe two things to plug in – most likely an overhead projector. When teachers were done teaching for the day, it was powered down to make sure electricity was not wasted. Over the years, the number of devices needed per individual has exploded as the Internet of Things becomes a reality. From schools and hospitals to technology companies, the number of things that are plugged in has gone largely unaddressed and has ballooned into the last and largest unmanaged IT expense.

Problems never end but neither does the ingenuity of Cisco! Following the success of its predecessors, HackIT III took place at the end of July, this time bigger, better and awesome-er than before. This quarter, San Jose, RTP and HackIT‘s brand new theater, UK, gathered 203 passionate participants to come up with innovative solutions to real problems that Cisco faces everyday. HackIT III‘s featured category came from an emerging market: Social Data, and as such, featured problems were crowdsourced via Idea Bank.

As we’ve been preparing for next week’s Collaboration Summit, I’ve been reflecting on the past 10 years in the video and communications industry. In today’s hyper-connected world, the bar has been raised and user expectations are higher than ever before, especially as it relates to video and its impact on efficiency and productivity. Users want to be connected all the time while having more control of when or how they are reached. They want to have access to an array of video collaboration experiences with the ability to choose how they want to interact based on what’s going on during the day. And they want it to be easy to use, easy to connect to others, easy to integrate with business applications and content, and of course easy to manage.
The list of user requirements is exciting for the industry. It proves the immense value inherent in video communications and is inspiring everyone to think harder about what users want not only now, but also years into the future. Yet keeping up with these demands is no easy feat for any technology vendor and can be even more challenging for IT teams supporting all of these new user scenarios in a business environment. Simply put, video communications needs to be reimagined so that the promise of pervasive adoption can happen, and can happen in a way that delivers unsurpassable value.
