I read an interesting post on No Jitter yesterday that poses the question, “The End of the Desk Phone?” The author suggests that the era of the desk phone is coming to a close. The gist is that tablets are essentially going to take over the known universe and send desk phones the way of the Studebaker.
Like a lot of people, the author is particularly fond of Apple iPads and positions them as the ideal phone eliminator. Once upon a time a lot of people said the same thing about microwave ovens vs. regular stoves. Didn’t happen. Sure, I can make popcorn with a lot less fuss and muss, but convenient though it may be, it’s not the tool for baking a chicken – or better yet, chocolate chip cookies. Read More »

Have you noticed all those iPads around the factory? All around the production areas, the office areas and the warehouse? These mobile connected devices and applications are quickly changing business and organizational models.
They are also changing employee habits and the way we work, as more and more users depend on tablets, such as the Apple iPad, for a variety of daily personal and professional tasks.
It’s not just Apple, though they’re the most common. All those other tablets too. Some of the others are capable of a drop or two, or more onto hard concrete!
The most prevalent use case that IT departments need to solve for is the one where an employee brings their own personal device into the company and seeks to gain network access. This is happening a lot these days. Funny, but companies are finding this is one of the ways they are attracting and keeping talent, especially young talent, so listen up!

Today’s enterprise employees don’t access e-mail from just their desktop computers. Whether they are working in their office or pulled into a mission critical meeting, working remotely, or on the go and accessing work via their mobile devices – they need to be able to collaborate on their own terms. As a market leader in collaboration Cisco is continuing to address this need; today, we are announcing new solutions at Enterprise Connect that advance the idea of people-centric collaboration – connecting people instead of devices. Cisco’s news is all about providing customers with a wide range of integrated and interoperable collaboration options so users can connect and collaborate with their peers from any device, at any time.
First, Cisco is introducing the new Jabber for iPad and Jabber for Windows. These new clients build on previous Jabber announcements that include Jabber for Android, iOS, Mac, BlackBerry and Cisco Cius tablets. Today’s announcement provides customers using a wide range of major devices with collaboration capabilities, including:
- high quality video
- voice, presence
- visual voicemail
With Jabber, users are able to have a cohesive user experience across any platform and collaborate the way that they prefer. For example, Cisco Jabber for iPad provides high definition video calling, including seamless integration with Cisco’s TelePresence solutions within the enterprise. Check out the video clip below, part of a demo from our upcoming Collaboration Announcements Webcast; Laurent Philonenko, Vice President and General Manager of Cisco’s Clients and Mobility Business demonstrates a video call using Cisco Jabber for iPad:
Cisco is also introducing a new immersive telepresence system, the Cisco TelePresence TX9000 Series. The TX9000 expands Cisco’s broad portfolio of telepresence offerings, which includes fully immersive systems, multipurpose room-based solutions, desktop and personal video solutions, and cloud-based managed offerings such as Cisco Callway, introduced in October 2011, ideal for small and medium-sized businesses looking to scale their workforce.
The TX9000 is built using a new industrial design that offers offers customers the highest level of video immersion, while reducing the bandwidth needed by 20 percent. Read More »

How many devices do you have that are sucking up IP addresses? Apple continues to lure me in for the latest and greatest iPad and iPhones, with the new iPad being the latest to capture my eye. This continual proliferation of devices has been illustrated in the latest VNI results. Apple of course enables these devices with a fully functioning IPv6 stack as was demonstrated at the IPv6 World Congress this year. While at the IPv6 World Congress 2012 we had the opportunity to chat with Jacqueline Queiroz , a Network Architect with Orange, about IPv6 adoption.
Network operators, content providers and device manufacturers all are navigating the IPv6 migration waters – Orange is no different. IPv6 adoption progress varies, but France has been proven to be one of the global leaders in IPv6 adoption. This was well chronicled in a study conducted by Google and discussed further here. Orange being headquartered in France plays an obvious role in this adoption trend. Read More »
