IP Address Management, Part I: Agility and Integration

The ability to deploy new equipment and services in a timely and cost-effective manner – a quality known as network agility– is crucial to maintaining profitability.  Bottlenecks that hinder deployment, reduce performance, or result in downtime add cost to every operation. For example, managing thousands of IP addresses by hand creates bottlenecks when provisioning and troubleshooting as well as increases the possibility of service outages caused by human error.

The growing complexity of networks further increases the difficulty of managing today’s networks.  Operators must accommodate new types of servers and clients, potentially from multiple vendors.  TCP/IP continues to connect more devices, resulting in a higher cost to manage each new device as the number of devices added to the network increases.  Furthermore, new technologies like IPv6, virtualization, cloud services, and mobile connectivity which increase management complexity drive the need for comprehensive, integrated, and feature-rich IP address management (IPAM) capabilities.

100G and IP + Optical Convergence Key Themes at Cisco Packet Optical Conference

Customers from around the world are gathered today at Cisco’s campus in Richardson, Texas to kick off the Spring 2012 Packet Optical Networking Conference (PONC). This brings together network operators, large enterprise customers, optical industry leaders, and Cisco solution teams at a three-day event to collaborate on best practices and future requirements in IP and optical solutions. Some of the key themes that will be featured at this year’s event include:

  1. 40G/100G Coherent DWDM transport over 10G infrastructure: Much of the infrastructure today was designed to support only 10G wavelengths.  It is undesirable to cap and start over with new infrastructure that is purpose built for 40/100G.  Cisco’s unique Coherent optical transport technology is a game Read More »

Full Speed Ahead for London Olympic Games with Cisco Videoscape

By George Tupy, Marketing Manager, Cisco Service Provider Video

It’s one of the most exciting times of the year here at Cisco. Not only are we exhibiting at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas, we are entering the home stretch for our third consecutive partnership with NBC as they prepare to present the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Once again, Cisco will be helping NBC capture 17 action-packed days of Olympic Games coverage by providing a massive, high-speed IP video network. As we did previously in Beijing and Vancouver, this broadcast-grade Cisco infrastructure will allow NBC to bring every minute of every event back to its studios in New York, and allow editors and shot selectors to work on Olympic footage as it is captured, from thousands of miles away. With the help of Cisco video technology, NBC will also bring viewers closer to the games than ever before, providing thousands of hours of live events, on-demand highlights, and behind the scenes footage to viewers’ PCs, smartphones, and tablets.

Just as exciting, the London Olympic Games will mark the first “Videoscape Olympics.” Using Cisco Videoscape technology, NBC will deliver a personalized, interactive, multi-screen Olympics experience to select users at event venues and accommodations. Users will be able to watch six live TV channels and hundreds of hours of on-demand Olympics coverage on their smartphones and tablets for the duration of the games.

The logistical and technical preparation involved in supporting a major worldwide broadcast event like the Olympics is a monumental effort, and here at Cisco, we feel like we are preparing for a marathon ourselves. It’s a credit to all of the amazing people at Cisco and NBC who are working around the clock to make it happen, and to the close working partnership our companies have developed. Just ask Craig Lau, vice president of Information Technology for NBC Olympics, who recently said, “Cisco helped us exceed our goals in Vancouver and Beijing. We look forward to London.”

FIPS-140 is a US and Canadian government standard that specifies security requirements for cryptographic modules. A cryptographic module is defined as “the set of hardware, software, and/or firmware that implements approved security functions (including cryptographic algorithms and key generation) and is contained within the cryptographic boundary.” The cryptographic module is what is being validated.
