As SAP says, the trends reshaping your world will ultimately transform the way you do business. Today, Cisco and SAP join together to deliver their visions for the Internet of Things (IoT) at SAP’s signature conference in New York: Conversations on the Future of Business. Bryce Barnes, Solution Leader, Internet of Things, Cisco, and Patrick Maroney, Principle, Industry Solutions Group, SAP, lead a session on How the Internet of Things (IoT) is impacting the Future of Business.
Bryce will explore the significance and impact of how connecting everything from machines in factories, to cars to sensors inside our bodies will change our lives, and drive new and exciting business models. He will explore the relationship between connectivity, big data, and analytics and highlight IoT examples that point to the future of business from manufacturing to Life Sciences, retail, mining, touching every aspect of how we design, make, and deliver products.
Value at stake: enormous. A top area of opportunity for manufacturers is to move toward a connected factory—an intelligent, networked plant environment that enables smart manufacturing. Read More »

Wow, that was one heck of a week. MWC 2014 is over, but, it was incredible. The show was packed, the collaboration with customers was dynamic and, once again, Barcelona was a fantastic host. For me though, it was also a clear statement that the Internet of Things (IoT) is exciting and gaining steam with mobile operators. In fact, as I looked through three discreet lenses, I could clearly see the excitement from customers and the advancement of the technologies that will help to enable them. I walked no less than 5 miles a day, traversing what became my own personal MWC IoT Triangle, jamming in customer and partner meetings in the Cisco booth, running to SAP’s booth to collaborate on our joint demos and then to the Plaza De Palau where I was hosting Smart and Connected City tours. Two more days to go… all the meetings, preparation, planning, and a tiny bit of stress is done and now for the big event itself – Mobile World Congress 2014. It’s going to be a massive show for SAP and I’m very much looking forward to interacting with customers, partners, influencers and thought leaders as I help them understand SAP’s strategy and plans for Internet of Things. One thing particularly has me very excited; we will be collaborating with Cisco to show how both companies are delivering IoT solutions today. There’s no doubt that IoT is the embodiment of this year’s theme at MWC – Creating what’s next. So in that spirit, let me highlight a few of the showcases featuring Cisco and SAP technologies for IoT at the event.
To start with, who doesn’t get thirsty walking around a massive exhibit hall? If that’s you then please stop by the SAP booth (6A30) and enjoy a beverage dispensed by the vending machine of the future. Featuring a massive touch screen to interact with you on a personalized basis, this system gets its smarts from a combination of Cisco networking coupled with SAP software. Read More »

Here we are, less than a week away from the most exciting conference of the year, Mobile World Congress (MWC). Exhibitors will be showing off the latest and greatest products and services to hit the mobile industry from over the past 12 months, an eternity in the technology world. MWC will also give us a glimpse into the future innovations across the DNA of the mobile industry; the Devices, Networks and Applications which make mobility so exciting.
For me, this year comes with added anticipation. At Cisco, we have been promoting our vision of the Internet of Things, the process of connecting the unconnected, of integrating business processes and analytics to machines and sensors to create new insights that solve real world consumer and corporate challenges. In addition, Cisco recently launched our Internet of Things Business Unit which is focused solely on meeting the demands of those industries and lines of business that operate in extreme environments. These customers need more robust networking products that can not only thrive in the comfortable confines of the carpeted and air conditioned world of Information Technology, but also survive in the harsh cold, wet, dirty and stressful world of the operations technologist, or what we call the OT. This harsh environment is believed to have significantly more “things” that connected compared with the traditional IT environment.
To that end, this year, Cisco and SAP have begun working aggressively together to help solve the latest set of problems our OT customers are facing. From my perspective, the possibility of combining Cisco’s proven set of networking, collaboration and security products, with SAP’s world class industry business applications and HANA platform is extremely powerful and one which I’m jazzed to demonstrate in Spain next week.
