Enterprises have taken on many cloud computing opportunities but for the most part the adoption of applications on the cloud is very early and mostly for new applications and for development and test use cases. Many enterprise applications have not been considered for cloud due to their legacy deployment models or application architecture.
Many companies have made the mistake of thinking that legacy enterprise virtualization technology, enterprise software methodology, enterprise provisioning systems, and enterprise management systems will survive their company’s business transformation. Unfortunately time and time again these systems are not able to scale, adapt quickly enough for the business, and frequently cost up to 10 times more than open source based solutions.

Cisco’s contribution focus is operationalizing Openstack for the enterprise scale, reliability, networking, and compute scheduling needs. In Havana, Cisco contributions included the Neutron Cisco plugin framework, feature additions to the Nexus plugin for physical Cisco Nexus switches, introduction of the new Cisco Nexus 1000v virtual switch plugin, and actively leading and participating in the design of the Neutron Modular Layer 2 plugin framework. Cisco’s contribution in these and other areas, such as Layer 3, Firewall and VPN network services including yesterday’s announcement highlighting additional IETF contributions Cisco introduced with the OpFlex protocol for application centric infrastructure (ACI) .

In today’s business world IT professionals have to manage multiple collaboration applications in order to support an increasingly mobile workforce, flexible desktop solutions as well as collaboration and video rooms within their organizations. The collaboration environment is multi-endpoint and multi-vendor and reaches beyond enterprise boundaries – both B2B and B2C.
Compounding this IT challenge is the maturity of the collaboration market. To date, companies have typically made significant investments and want to protect these investments as they move forward. In particular, companies want to protect the quality of experience as they move to integrate across department, company and consumer boundaries, and as they look to expand their deployments. This challenge grows more acute as the market rapidly evolves towards innovations such as H.265 and WebRTC.
Companies are looking for true interoperability with a seamless user experience that:
- Allows them to benefit from new innovations
- Interoperates with existing and future investments
- And, works across company boundaries and functions in a diverse environment
What a great reception at InfoComm 2013! We had the opportunity to share with customers the innovations we are driving around conferencing to deliver better scale, quality and interoperability. They are excited about what we are doing to make conferencing more affordable, while at the same time maintaining the high quality experience that they expect from Cisco.
It was fantastic to see such a high level of interest in our new pervasive conferencing announcements. Here are a few highlights of what we demonstrated at the show:
- Further increases in scale, enabling greater efficiencies and affordability – we now support up to 96 video systems in a single meeting and virtually unlimited participants through WebEx enabled TelePresence.
- Simplified solution choice with a broader range of deployment options – now included is virtualized software, and the new compact Multiparty 310 and Multiparty 320 appliance platforms.
- Entry level packages for new customers – customers can now deploy a compact appliance solution, and start from one screen license.

I am a strong believer in the power of video; video can transform the relationships we have with our colleagues, partners, suppliers and customers. Our goal is to make video as universally available and easy to use as voice and data are today. Recent developments make it possible to scale video more cost-effectively across organizations, but as an industry there are still more hurdles to knock down in order to make rich, effective and efficient video collaboration part of everyone’s daily routine.
Customers have a breadth of needs when it comes to when and how they collaborate, and it’s no surprise to me that customers are taking a step back to evaluate the needs of their organization both now and in the future. While doing so, they are also trying to understand the alphabet soup of standards and what it means in terms of technologies working together. Which standard is better? What are the benefits of each? Will a technology that uses one standard be able to communicate with a technology that uses another standard? Will a technology made by one vendor be able to communicate with a technology made by another vendor?
I personally believe it is the vendors’ responsibility to take the complexity out of the equation and do whatever it takes to make things work together. For me, that means industry-wide commitment to open standards. Open standards ensure true interoperability across vendor and technology boundaries bringing us closer to our goal of making video universally available and easy to use. Cisco has led the way in developing open standards, driving the industry towards interoperable collaboration solutions. And we continue to do so.
