New Independent Research Study on Hybrid Cloud Business Trends and Technical Challenges

January 14, 2013 at 3:22 pm PST

[Join Cisco for a Live Announcement Webinar on Cloud Innovations on February 5: Register Here]

A commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Cisco on Hybrid Cloud technology trends sheds light on many of the business drivers and technical obstacles to creating a seamless connection from the enterprise data center to cloud service providers. This custom research study was sponsored by Cisco, and we’ve been authorized to share some of the data and insights in advance of the publication.

Cisco and Forrester generally define Hybrid Cloud as the integration of an enterprise data center or in-house private cloud which is seamlessly connected to a cloud service provider, at least to the extent that allows for virtual machine mobility and secure communications between the two cloud sites. A real hybrid cloud strategy can provide on-demand flexibility for where applications are hosted, and can help optimize cloud infrastructure costs beyond a purely private or public cloud strategy. In the commissioned study, Forrester showed that over three-quarters of respondents planning or using IaaS were looking for a tightly coupled hybrid cloud strategy, or were currently implementing one:

Cisco at Garner DC Las Vegas : A pragmatic view and approach of the evolution of the data center in the era of clouds and network programmability.

December 5, 2012 at 4:34 am PST

As expected a lot of talks, sessions and interest this year about the reality of the  cloud deployment and hybrid cloud  at Gartner DC Las Vegas.

Cisco is now perceived as a very credible player in cloud – In fact a quick electronic poll  from the audience during one of  the key notes speechs ranked Cisco as the number 2 amongst the vendors.

As a proof point of Cisco influence in the cloud computing evolution, both David Yen , Cisco SVP & GM Data Center Group, and John Manville Cisco SVP , Global Infrastructure for IT, presented Cisco vision and achievement in terms of infrastructure and foundation for cloud  : Network programmability , and convergence infrastructure are at the core of the efforts driven by these Cisco executives and solution teams to deliver robust infrastructures for both our customers and Cisco IT organization.

If you are interested to know more about these sessions, stay tuned. I will post in the following days on this same blog the  slide decks from David and John ,as well as two short and very  interesting videos that I did these days:
-One one hand a short dialog between Giuliano Di Vitantonio, Cisco VP Marketing Data Center and Cloud,  and David Yen.

-On the other hand a summary of the presentation by John Manville (see introduction blog from Omar Sultan Living with the Programmable Cloud)

Along the same lines , I also invited a panel of bloggers and tweeps , who attend Gartner DC  to share with us their reaction to these presentations and  their view on the current challenges faced by the IT organizations.

In this video you will hear from Presidio Steve Kaplan (@ROIdude), VCE Jeramiah Doodley (@jdooley_clt)  , Cisco Jason Schroedl (@Jschroedl)  and Todd Brannon (@tobranno) .

In Amsterdam, a ‘Cloudy’ Forecast for Broadband

By Uwe Lambrette, Director, Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group

Amsterdam may be the one place on earth where it rains more than it does in London. So, it was no surprise that I encountered stormy weather on my flight to Broadband World Forum (BBWF) 2012. As things turned out, the conference theme and the weather were clearly aligned, since the BBWF is fiercely embracing evolution to cloud. Here are some core themes that emerged as I shared some of Cisco IBSG’s findings at the conference:

Cloud 2.0: Most service providers (SPs) have already launched an initial cloud offering and are now beginning to measure scaling and growth. The initial offering is often a stand-alone cloud solution, typically focused on infrastructure as a service (IaaS). Once their original implementation goes live, SPs often need to focus on the following improvements: Read More »

The Enterprise’s Inclination to Private Cloud

By Uwe Lambrette, Director of Service Provider Solutions, Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG)

Cisco IBSG’s recent interviews with about 45 enterprise CIOs and architects clearly revealed that enterprises have a preference for private cloud. They want to maintain control over their IT, especially where the architecture is new and skills need to be built. In addition, they are not comfortable with accepting externally provided cloud solutions (although there are certainly exceptions).

At the same time, the survey indicated that once enterprises have gained private-cloud experience, they are more willing to allocate this architecture to an external provider.

This is reminiscent of the classic outsourcing
cycle, where corporate functions are moved externally once they have become a commodity.

Cloud a Hot Topic at CiscoLive!

It’s that time of year again when we all gather for Cisco Live US to share the latest and greatest in the world of IT and networking. This year the event is being held in San Diego, and there are 17,000 in-person attendees—a new record! One of my favorite things about Cisco Live is that I have a chance to interact one-on-one with customers, partners, and analysts. When I do, the topic of the cloud invariably is on their minds.

Of course many already know about the Cisco CloudVerse strategy and solution set, which is based on the Unified Data Center, Cloud Intelligent Network, and Cloud Applications and Services, all of which are supported by Cisco and partner professional services. What they might not know about, however, are all of the advancements Cisco has made to make cloud networks truly intelligent since last December when we originally announced CloudVerse.

Yesterday here at Cisco Live, we announced Cisco Cloud Connected Solution as the latest innovation in the Cloud Intelligent Network. This solution adds a host of capabilities to your already existing network infrastructure, allowing you to take full advantage of cloud computing.  A number of new capabilities were introduced, but my personal favorites are the Cloud Connectors and the new Read More »
