In many parts of the world there was a holiday period and celebration of the New Year, and it reminds me that the world has holiday periods all year round. What happens to your remote access demands during holidays? One would think that being on holiday means no one needs access to corporate resources, correct? Sometimes I really wish that were true. Sadly, that has not always been the case even for me. As an example or two, maybe you can relate to the people below or know someone like this:
Deloitte’s 2013 Annual Holiday survey came out with some staggering statistics:
- Nearly 7 in 10 shoppers will use their smartphones and tablets to shop this holiday season.
- Nearly half of all shoppers will use social media to assist in shopping.
- 73% of shoppers will be influenced by coupons and promotional offers.
Retailers both online and in-store can no longer ignore the power of mobile technology and social media influence with shoppers. Shoppers using mobile devices inside stores are actually more likely to make a purchase when being presented with the right information. In fact, this isn’t only true for retailers, but across all industries. Whether it’s guests, visitors, patients or passengers, there’s a real opportunity for businesses to make an impression via the mobile device.
Today I am happy to announce our latest Cisco Wireless Software Release 7.6. As you may recall from Sujai Hajela’s State of Cisco WLAN blog earlier this week, Cisco’s Wireless group has been ahead of the competition with our dedication to delivering cutting edge, high performing technology to our customers.

Last week, a friend of mine jokingly asked me, “So, what is Santa bringing to Cisco’s wireless customers this holiday season?”
I couldn’t help but grin because I already knew what many of you are now aware of: Santa’s wireless holiday delivery came early this year, with Release 7.4 now posted on Cisco.com.
We at Cisco’s Wireless Networking Group are really excited to show off this shiny new release. 7.4 is jam-packed with 40+ features to improve the everyday lives of Cisco wireless customers.
So what makes 7.4 so special? We specifically chose each feature with the goal of creating an uncompromised user-experience while keeping wireless network administrators happy by making it easy manage their WLAN more efficiently. The 7.4 release specifically focuses on four main pillars:
- Quality of Experience for Wireless Users
- Improved Security & Spectrum intelligence
- Improved performance for small deployments
- Ability to deploy innovative IT services using mobile apps
It’s the day after Halloween and people across the country are hanging up their costumes, sorting through their candy and recovering from sugar highs. At Cisco, we’ve once again been reminded of the power of telepresence—especially during the holidays.
In some cultures Halloween is seen as a time where the door between the physical world and the metaphysical is opened, creating a connection between the two. For me, Cisco TelePresence opened up doors to communication I otherwise wouldn’t have experienced.
When I told my daughter that her gramma was going to be with her other (younger) grandchild this year for Halloween, I did not expect her reaction. She’s 12 and has had gramma with her every year since birth and I figured she knew she would eventually have to share.
But that was not my kid’s idea. She was downright pissed!
“She needs to see me in my costume! It’s tradition!” she told me. Oops. Apparently we have a tradition that I just took for granted all these years.
But then I suggested we have a little fun and get to share the holiday with her cousin as well. We could do a WebEx, show my mom my daughter’s costume and see our little three year old firefighter in his outfit. “I guess that’ll work,” she conceded. And off we went. We did a test drive on Sunday.
