And for that matter, I expect that a retailer knows what I am looking for and provides relevant promotions and discounts. These rising expectations have been born out of leading digital retailers and now that the bar has been set – anything that falls short feels like a disappointment.
Today’s shoppers are looking for efficiency, ease in problem-solving, and faster time to purchase. They want to take advantage of savings through discounts and promotional offers and they want to be engaged when learning about new items, entertainment, and product options. To address these growing expectations, Cisco and Panasonic are partnering to transform the shopping experience through their Powershelf solution. The solution enables brick and mortar retailers to automate inventory tracking and pricing data, helping them optimize their supply chain and better manage demand. In addition, real-time product information can be delivered to a customer’s mobile device.
The future involves much more than improving customer engagement. Cities are challenged with delivering enhanced citizen services and information on a limited budget. In the face of inclement weather and emergencies, it is critical that cities link dispatch, first responders and the community with timely, accurate information. For example, the City of Mississauga is leveraging sensors and wireless connectivity to make these connections, analyze trends and share information between citizen services, public communications, and operations.
As more and more citizens prefer to receive information and updates via their mobile devices, this integrated public service system will allow cities to put a request into action quickly and efficiently and provide real-time updates. Now, the City of Mississauga can deploy operations teams and emergency services faster, enable new services without recognizing an increase in IT budget and improve public safety with immediate, actionable information.
This week marks the convergence of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Health IT Week. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease and to promote early detection, while National Health IT Week is a collaborative forum to advance health through the best use of information technology (IT).
While these may seem like unrelated events, they really aren’t. Health IT, specifically the Internet of Everything (IoE), is beginning to use technology to change how breast cancer is detected and diagnosed.
Rob Royea, a scientist and entrepreneur, has developed a medical innovation called the iTBra, a bra patch embedded with IoE sensor technology. The iTBra solution contains comfortable, intelligent breast patches which collect up to 12 hours of data for analysis.
The iTBra can detect abnormalities, such as tiny temperature changes, in breast tissue. These tiny temperature fluctuations may indicate breast cancer, at an early state when it can be treated and possibly even cured. The iTBra is tissue agnostic so it even works with dense breast tissue, which can be difficult to detect with traditional screening and often results in false negatives during mammography.
Cisco is helping fund a documentary about the iTBra called DETECTED. This documentary will chronicle Rob’s journey to create the iTBra and shed important light on how internet-enabled bras can make a difference in early cancer detection.
Throughout the month of October, you can follow inspirational stories from Cisco employees who are breast cancer survivors. Their personal stories highlight the importance of early detection, positive attitudes, and a determination to live each day to the fullest.

I obtained my Master’s degree in Child Psychology. I realized that most of my student projects pivoted around activities like spending time with and reading stories to sick children in hospitals. And teaching families in rural areas about healthy living and good nutrition. My project reports were quoted as examples of near ideal written pieces that other students could emulate. The seed was sown.
I started my career with writing, mostly on health, fitness, nutrition among many other topics. I critiqued books on health, care, and life. As I progressed in my career, I moved into IT marketing. I could feel my satisfaction levels peaking when I could bring technology and healthcare closer together. Technology can improve healthcare access and delivery. It’s especially impactful in rural areas where the nearest hospital or clinic could be hours away.
