Think your energy bill is high? Try a factory!

Energy cost and availability show up in every day conversations. What was your electricity bill last month? Mine was about $180. That pays for my lights, my TV’s, my stereo, my refrigeration, and probably some things I don’t know about. Maybe even timers to turn things on and off. But I know that some of my neighbors always ask what my bill was and then compare it to theirs. And given my Christmas lighting, likely my bill will be higher than theirs!

But in terms of energy consumption, I am just a tiny pea. Think about what our manufacturing plants use every day. They need to start up a process, they need to heat, refrigerate, do something to make it a product, transport, do what they do best, all to make a product we can go to a retailer and buy. And sometimes that product was built a continent away from us and then it needed to be shipped to a Distribution Center, so it could end up on the shelf in front of me.

So lets talk for a bit about energy and manufacturing plants. Many estimates are that manufacturing plants consume better than 50% of the power that is produced today. Just as we, consumers, are presented with offers from our utility company to “time sequence” our usage, manufacturing companies get more. Doesn’t it make sense for them to get all the information they can? Read More »

One Plus One Equals What?

I was fascinated with genetics when I was young, and still to this day, I somewhat regret that I didn’t choose Life Sciences as my major. I was amazed in 2000 to see that a group of scientists under the Human Genome Project has completely sequenced genome -- a full five years before the expected date of completion. This project was considered a mega project because the human genome has billions of base-pairs, and was carried out by geneticists in many countries.

How did they do it? I’d attribute the success to collaborative efforts and the power of AND, or one plus one is greater than two. It may be hard for me to explain the laws of math behind this equation to my second grader, but this is the power that drove the success of the Human Genome Project. Today, I want to share with you another great example of this power in-force: the Cisco EnergyWise Ecosystem Partnership.

Cisco Data Center 2011-Texas: What Is LEED?

In Cisco Data Center 2011-Texas, you hear a lot about the pursuit of Gold LEED certification for our new Texas Data Center 2 (DC2) facility. But while people who design and support buildings may be familiar with LEED, not all who design and support IT networks are.  Here’s a quick primer and some thoughts on what LEED certification means to our IT organization.

Energy as a Service is Closer than Ever

IP Energy Cisco White PaperIn the spirit of follow where the data leads you; how thoughtful are we in how we plan for and manage the data center?  As an IT industry we spend a lot of time debating what a data center is and how much of an impact it may have on productivity, competitive advantage, security, business continuity and as of late ecologic impact.  This is perhaps why the most senior, challenge-loving type A’s focus their careers on data centers.

Whatever your definition, a data center represents the physical manifestation of our digital behaviors across a range of activities.  Data centers also support the most mission critical of all our “day job” applications; web services, email, payroll and so on.  So why is it that our “IT” industry is not aggressively applying more collaborative ingenuity to real world challenges?  A complex question of course but what we are happy to share today is an example of what we’ve been able to do over the last year.

Built on a foundation of Cisco Energy Management Technologies and Services we were able to save $1M USD in one year across 11 labs.  While this is only a pilot, it serves as a proof of concept for things to come…
