The Future of #ITConsumption in the 3rd Platform Era

The way information technology is being  sourced and used  within government and educational organizations has been changing at an increasingly rapid rate. We’re calling it the “3rd Platform” era. What does this mean? The 3rd Platform era is the era of cloud, mobility and social media. It’s driven by the ability to tap into IT solutions anywhere, anytime on any device.

Recently we have seen the rapid spread of end-user devices and new applications. Public Sector IT departments are regularly challenged to keep up with demands needed to support the new devices within this era. The change in consumption and increase in the number of new devices and applications has increased the risk of “shadow IT,” which occurs when  new IT solutions are brought into the workplace without the involvement of the IT managers. Because it’s so easy for workers and managers to purchase apps or subscribe to new online solutions, “shadow IT” is a common issue at many organizations, bringing with them risks that are unknown to many outside of IT Management. Highlights from RSA 2014

IMG_1155This week I had the opportunity to attend the RSA Conference in San Francisco.

The theme for the conference this year was “Share. Learn. Secure” with a focus on recent breaches, surveillance programs and DDoS attacks with:

  • Hundreds of educational sessions with insights, best practices and real implementation case studies
  • Live keynote speakers
  • Two expos featuring hundreds of solutions including Cisco and Sourcefire booths featuring threat-centric security solutions to reduce complexity, provide visibility, continuous control, and advanced threat protection

Cisco’s Chris Young, SVP, Cisco Security Business Group, and Padmasree Warrior, Chief Technology and Strategy Officer, delivered the keynote “The New Model of Security” sharing our vision and strategy Intelligent Cybersecurity for the Real World.

Public Safety Blog Series-Highlights from IACP 2013 in Philly

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the 120th Annual International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)  Conference and Expo in Philadelphia.

IACP CiscoIt was an honor to attend this event and learn from experts about best practices in public safety as well as to recognize this years Winners and Finalists selected by the IACP Community Policing Committee recognized for the best community policing practices representing agencies around the world with the Community Policing Award from IACP and Cisco.

This year there were over 450 separate events, including 200 workshops covering a comprehensive array of public safety issues, best practices and solutions including sessions concerning major public safety incidents during the past year, including the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting and the Boston Marathon Bombing, that have affected each and every one of us.

Collaboration, shared services and improved communications capabilities were important themes throughout this year’s conference.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

This month, we are marking the tenth anniversary of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). The goal is to raise awareness and educate Americans about the importance of cyber security. Agencies and organizations are holding events and driving initiatives to engage Americans in a discussion about how to establish safer practices.

NCSAM sheds light on the most pressing topics in security, including mobility, education, cyber crime and critical infrastructure.  In alignment with NCSAM’s mission, we are sharing our own cyber security best practices, advice and resources.
