A couple of weeks ago, I announced a new name and a new mission for the group I lead at Cisco. I’ll do my best to minimize reader exposure to boring administrative details, but the long and the short of it is that the former Cisco Global Government Solutions Group (GGSG) has become the Cisco Threat Response, Intelligence, and Development (TRIAD) organization.
Any organizational name change is only a label placed on more fundamental transformations in missions, strategies, and desired outcomes. While the new organization will continue to serve government customers, the time has come to mobilize the expertise we have built up over the years to help critical infrastructure and enterprise customers strengthen their abilities to deliver IT-based services and value with minimal disturbance from unauthorized sources.
Vectoring the organization’s mission to threat is the key to understanding what TRIAD is all about. Through our work with Cisco customers, observation and analysis of phenomena visible in Cisco and customer networks, and application of innovative thinking about security practices and processes, we see enormous potential for developing and delivering threat-focused approaches to cyber security into products, services, and solutions. Today, we are more interconnected than ever before. Not only do we use the Internet to stay connected, informed and engaged, but also we rely on it for all of our day-to-day needs. We rely heavily on the Internet for everything from submitting taxes, to applying for student loans, to following traffic signals, to even powering our homes.
Acknowledging the importance of cyber security, President Obama designated October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month to engage and educate public and private sector partners to raise awareness about cyber security and improve the resiliency of the nation in the event of a cyber incident.
Government and corporate leaders overwhelmingly identify cyber security and associated trust issues as one of their top IT concerns. Use of network-based technologies such as mobility, collaboration and virtualization are increasing, as are related threats. Securing business infrastructure and data relies on solutions and secure systems from “trusted” vendors, a relationship founded on the reputation of the vendor, its people, its processes and its technology.

TeleCommunication Systems’ (TCS) OS-IRIS offering has been added to the General Services Administration (GSA) and Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) Future COMSATCOM Services Acquisition (FCSA) contract program, allowing Department of Defense agencies and all other federal agencies to leverage the world’s only operating Internet Routing In Space (IRIS) managed satellite services.
“Now, via the addition to the FCSA contract program, TCS provides agencies in the federal government with easier access to the world’s most advanced routed COMSATCOM solution,” said Michael Bristol, senior vice president and general manager of government solutions at TCS. “This contract also gives these agencies the ability to purchase TCS OS-IRIS services at a very competitive price.”
TCS OS-IRIS is the world’s first commercial service offering of Cisco enabled Internet Routing In Space (IRIS) managed network services. The combination of Cisco IRIS satellite architecture, in addition to TCS global network implementation and support capabilities, brings a new era of true IP end-to-end communications to the satellite industry.
Earlier this year, Frost & Sullivan presented Cisco’s Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) with its 2012 Global Satellite Transponder Technology Innovation Award for unrivaled accomplishments in the satellite industry.
Cisco IRIS allows space and satellite communications to take full advantage of the value and capability of networking. It extends the benefits of the Internet Protocol (IP) to satellite communications, which have traditionally used proprietary protocols that are difficult to operate within conventional IP-based wireline and wireless networks.
