Cisco today announced enhancements to its 5900 Series Embedded Services Router (ESR) product line, including the 5940 ESR and 5915 ESR, to bring improved performance and added features to the ruggedized routers. The updates expand the capabilities of Cisco Mobile Ready Net solution architecture, establishing a scalable mobile network that connects organizational resources with a high degree of security to connect users how, when and where they need.
The Cisco Mobile Ready Net solution is the platform for extending information sharing and collaboration to highly mobile users, even those operating in the most severe and remote locations. The solution’s architecture targets the critical challenges of mobile networking environments, including size, weight, power, router-radio integration and ad hoc networking.
Enhancements to the 5900 Series ESR include IP Multiplexing, WAAS Express, improved performance, support for an extended number of Call Manager Express end points, Dynamic Link Exchange Protocol (DLEP), Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS), Common Criteria, USGv6 and IPv6 Ready Logo certification and much more.

These experiences have enabled me to meet with statesmen and CEOs, into open and closed-door meetings on “the Hill” and abroad, to serve as a member of the CSIS Commission on Cybersecurity, and participate on numerous think tanks, boards of directors, and advisory boards. I’ve worked and learned from leaders in private industry and global governments, the defense and intelligence communities, and I’ve always gotten after it with the goal of making a difference and producing positive results.
When Brad Boston asked for me to succeed him in leading the Cisco Global Government Solutions Group (GGSG) in addition to my role overseeing the Corporate Security Programs Organization (CSPO), I was humbled, honored, and excited. GGSG/CSPO is a great organization. Fortunately for Cisco, our customers, and me, Brad will remain nearby, focusing on our go-forward strategy for Satellite Solutions. This expanded role certainly ups the ante for me, yet it is not an altogether new one. As a member of GGSG senior staff since it was formed, and in my role leading Corporate Security during the past ten years, I’ve watched the organization grow and thrive.
In taking the helm, I will build on this team’s outstanding achievements in meeting the unique requirements of governments around the world. We’ll continue to address the challenges faced by global government agencies, defense and intelligence communities, and work to advise our public sector customers on the leading practices and technology solutions that can achieve and enhance their mission goals. In my ongoing role as Chief Security Officer, I’ll continue to oversee and work with my leadership team to drive initiatives focused on Information Security, Product Security and Government Security, with focus on crypto, advanced government services, and cybersecurity—in support of our customers.

Cisco’s Internet Routing In Space (IRIS), the first solution to bring the networking capabilities of Cisco IOS Software to space, is continuing to transform the satellite communication industry.
The testing and deployment of IRIS has been full of industry firsts. In the most recent milestone, TeleCommunication Systems (TCS), Cisco’s partner in deploying IRIS services, this week announced that it has completed production integration testing and roll-out of a software upgrade to OS-IRIS, adding enhanced encryption and additional IPv6 support to the platform.
According to Michael Bristol, general manager and senior vice president of government solutions for TCS, “Cisco IRIS technology is transforming how government agencies and commercial organizations use IP-based network services to accomplish their objectives. This is another milestone in the long-term satellite industry collaboration between TCS and Cisco, and we look forward to increasing opportunities for both government and commercial markets to deploy more flexible and cost-efficient solutions.”
TCS OS-IRIS allows organizations to directly connect sites on multiple continents without the need for double satellite hops or the traditional connection to a commercial teleport. This converged solution enables voice, data and video traffic over a single IP network to increase efficiency and flexibility, compared with more fragmented, traditional satellite communication networks. Customers benefit from increased bandwidth availability, reduced latency, optimization tools and application flexibility delivered by TCS through an end-to-end Cisco secure IP network.

TCS provides OS-IRIS managed satellite services for government and commercial customer use, allowing organizations to reach multiple continents from a single connection to TCS’ network infrastructure.
