Cisco Technologies featured at OFC/NFOEC’14: Programmable, Converged & Highly Scalable

This past March at OFC/NFOEC’14 in San Francisco, California, Cisco was a once again a significant part of the leading edge dialog.  Organizers took full advantage of the dynamic Moscone Center facilities to create a highly compelling environment for suppliers, analysts, industry experts and end users to collaborate on optical and networking solutions.  The event was very successful for Cisco from both a face-to-face and social media perspective.

This year, we leveraged one of our largest booths ever to create some ambitious live demos showcasing how Evolved Programmable Networks (EPN) are designed to handle the challenges and opportunities presented by the Internet of Everything.  The entire Network Convergence System (NCS 6000, 4000 and 2000) was live within the booth, and one year after its introduction at OFC, an expanded Cisco CPAK family of transceiver modules was also featured, including the LR4, SR10, ER4 and show favorite – the Cisco CPAK 10 x 10G LR solution.

Demystifying Multi-layer Convergence and SDN at OFC/NFOEC 2014

If it’s Spring, then it is time for OFC/NFOEC – the world’s leading event for advancing optical solutions (March 9-13).  Cisco will, once again, have a strong presence, including our largest booth ever (booth 4359), at this year’s event being held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.  Building upon the industry wide dialog around multi-layer convergence and SDN, we will showcase the Evolved Programmable Network (EPN), the Cisco Network Convergence Systems (NCS) and our highly innovative CMOS photonics technology – CPAK.

EPN is the foundational layer for Cisco Open Networking Environment ( ONE) strategy and is the natural evolution of the IP next generation network (IP NGN). It is designed specifically to leverage the opportunities presented by the Internet of Everything (IoE). It optimizes the delivery of multi-service solutions over service provider networks.  An EPN increases service provider revenue opportunities, lowers total cost of ownership (TCO) and supercharges service agility.  One of the key elements of Cisco’s EPN architecture is the Cisco NCS product family featuring the NCS 6000 Series IP Router, the NCS 4000 Series Converged Packet Transport platform and the NCS 2000 agile ROADM platform.  A key differentiator to Cisco’s EPN is our growing portfolio of CPAK transceivers delivering never before seen levels of density, power savings and flexibility to Cisco’s portfolio of data center switches, IP routing and transport solutions.

Executing on Virtualization

With all the talk around virtualization in our industry, it’s easy to get a bit confused.  Between our industry’s love of acronyms and passionate evangelism of technological specs, it can be far too difficult at times to determine what’s really important, what is real, and what is just talk.  Our announcement of the Cisco Evolved Services Platform today is meant to address these very points.  It represents the progress we’ve made on our provider virtualization strategy and, unlike many others in the industry, orients the talk of virtualization around real business benefits and customer deployments.

The Evolved Services Platform represents a fundamental shift in the way service provider networks will be built.  It not only has the industry’s broadest, most comprehensive range of virtualized functions, but it also orchestrates them to create, automate and provision services in real time, across compute, storage and network functions across the entire architecture.  As the middle layer of the Cisco ONE SP architecture which works in conjunction with the infrastructure layer – the Evolved Programmable Network which we announced in September – the ESP ensures the right type of experience for subscribers regardless of how or where they connect to the network.  And it does this while also delivering both significant operational cost savings and the ability to more easily and quickly pursue new revenue generating opportunities.  In essence, the ESP does the equivalent for a service provider business as a retail storefront, factory, and tool kit would do for a manufacturer. It allows them to “manufacture” network experiences quickly, efficiently, and in a customized manner.
