Small Carriers and the NMS/EMS
Small carriers and rural local exchange carriers (RLECs) often forgo Network Management Systems/Element Management Systems (NMS/EMS) platforms because they don’t have dedicated IT departments. They often have limited staff, time and in some cases lack the breadth of technical IT skills needed to manage complex NMS/EMS platforms. In addition, finding a NMS/EMS solution that is priced to match their network size and that is easy to use and deploy can be a time consuming (if not impossible) task.
The Value of Network Management
Even though they may not use a NMS/EMS platform, these service providers do recognize the value of using a management tool. They know how an NMS/EMS can efficiently perform device management, network provisioning and network assurance tasks. They also know that an NMS/EMS can provide insight into network operation and performance, enabling their staff to more accurately respond to potential problems as well as automate manual tasks. And finally, they know the added value that an NMS/EMS can provide as they grow their business – particularly how it can support the expansion of new services.

The pace of change around us is no longer constant. It is continually accelerating. We all want to get and consume information, services, and just about anything instantly. My new coffeemaker brews me a fresh cup in just a couple of minutes, but it usually takes me ten minutes just to collect up the tools I need to prepare to start a home improvement project, and more than that to travel and get what I need from the local hardware store. And let’s not forget how long commute times are for most of us — much longer than just 10 minutes.
So, just how fast can we get new networking services up and running and customize them for our businesses. Imagine if we could easily and securely order the network services we want online in minutes. In the western Scandinavian fjords of Norway, Enivest an internet service provider has deployed a new optical transport network using a Cisco optical network solution (NCS 2000). While this, in itself, may not be big news to most people, the real story is about how Enivest managed this deployment. For people who are not familiar with the expertise and time needed for installing and then lighting up an optical network, it typically takes two days per node/site with some give or take depending on the level of the technician’s expertise.
So, if we consider the eight (8) sites and nodes that Enivest lit up along a 260km span of Sognefjord in Norway (see map below) we would estimate the deployment to have taken upwards of 16 days. What is impressive abut this deployment is that it took less than a week for Enivest to install and turn on over 260 km of fiber running through 8 sites/nodes for its customers. This kind of agility is important for service providers who are continually looking to cut operating costs and realize new revenue streams.

Following-up on the recent successful announcement of the Evolved Programmable Network Manager application (EPN Manager), we caught up with JL Valente, Vice President of Product Management for Cisco’s Cloud and Virtualization Group. He shared his thoughts on how EPN Manager can be used to manage converged, packet optimized optical transport and Carrier Ethernet networks, as well as enable organizations to address key business initiatives, including:
- Improving business agility (and responsiveness) to market changes and transitions such as explosive traffic growth, packet optical network convergence and new business models prompted by over-the-top (OTT) entrants
- Simplifying the overall approach to business operations by eliminating complex management systems and error-prone manual processes
- More efficiently managing the time and manpower required to support daily network management tasks such as network provisioning, troubleshooting, and proactive network assurance.
