Educause: Bringing Together Technology and Education to Invest in Our Future

It’s amazing to think about the way a traditional classroom operated only a few years ago.  As Renee Patton recently pointed out in her blog post, there were rules, there were barriers, and they were all kept within the confines of an educational institution.  As technology has advanced, those rules have been challenged, barriers overcome, and an entirely new era of learning has emerged.

The collaborative nature of education, educators and learners has allowed new technologies to thrive and innovation to accelerate.  We’re flipping classrooms, implementing mobile learning programs and developing entirely new ways for students to connect and engage.  And we’re looking with excitement toward a future that will continually change the way we teach and learn. Leading Universities Help in the Development of the New WebEx Social for Higher Education Offer

Technology is changing our lives at an incredibly rapid pace. Yet, a great deal of work remains in providing colleges and universities the collaboration tools they need to drive greater levels of knowledge sharing and innovation. That’s why we have worked closely with a number of leading higher education institutions, including Duke, North Carolina State, Case Western and the University of Chicago, to develop the new WebEx Social for Higher Education offer – being announced today at the annual EDUCAUSE conference.  This people-centric, cloud collaboration platform helps unify the education workspace and provides a truly connected learning experience, not only for students, but for the entire ecosystem, including faculty, staff and administrators.

With WebEx Social for Higher Education, users can quickly find subject matter experts, gather feedback from groups, collaborate on documents and locate relevant content and communities to help complete assignments and projects much more efficiently.  It engages students the way they want to be engaged – from anywhere and on any device (including iPad and iPhone), making information accessible to a broader audience to expand teaching and learning opportunities.

Higher Ed Loves Video!

I recently got back from a successful east coast jaunt and wanted to share some thoughts on my first Educause experience while they’re still fresh.

After marketing video across many verticals, I have to say I was nothing short of impressed with the level of attendee engagement we received from the Educause 2011 crowd around video.

Video and higher ed are a natural pair in many ways — video is the cornerstone technology for lecture capture and also helps make distance learning aspirations a reality. Along these lines, our new Lecture Vision solution announcement and demo were very well received and it was great to hear how universities have already started down the path to pervasive video.
