Cisco Networking Academy Inspiring a Future Generation

There is a lot of talk about the Olympic legacy for London 2012, yet in some parts of the media in particular there seems to remain some cynicism. But over the past few weeks and months I have witnessed the genuine efforts being made by Cisco to building a brilliant future after the Games.

For example former Olympic silver medallist Roger Black and Cisco ambassador has spent the last week touring around several schools in the east end of London to highlight the Cisco Network Academy programme and inspire kids to look at Science Technology Engineering and Math subjects at school. Technology Helps College Get Bigger in Texas

May 29, 2012 at 11:04 am PST

It’s one thing to use technology. It’s another to take that technology and do something extraordinary with it – especially when that involves something that benefits others. Each year, IDG’s Computerworld Honors Program recognizes organizations that use “visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change.”

This year, one of those organizations happens to be Lone Star College System, a community college in Texas (naturally) that has integrated collaboration technology from Cisco to reach more students and improve the overall learning experience for an increasingly diverse student population.

In fact I’m grateful to the folks at Automation World for bringing it to my attention. Automation World is a good source of industry insight (readers might remember the article I contributed about the use of Social Media in Manufacturing, which I blogged about in January of this year:  How Social Media Improves Collaboration – Automation World, November 2011, and how they awarded Cisco ‘First Team Honors’ which you can read more about in the blog: Automation World First Team Honors Won by Cisco Systems for Leadership in Networking.

So, back to the point of this blog. The folks at the Cambridge Centre, lead by Dr. Finbarr Livesey, Director, Centre for Industry and Government IfM, University of Cambridge, come up with some interesting perceptions concerning the UK. Nearly 1,500 respondents suggests that manufacturing has become more High Tech and they believe that there is a strong requirement for more highly skilled workers.

There’s the rub. Read More »
