Train Employees And Yield Higher Social Media Results

Here we are…just into the third week of 2013 and questions of how we will use social media in more strategic ways, or measure more effectively, or take our efforts to the next level are already heating up. Goals, aspirations, expectations, responsibilities, commitments…the list goes on. Is your head spinning yet?

While it may seem overwhelming, indeed these are important questions to ask ourselves as social media becomes even more integrated into the business structure and expands its value even further. While its easy to see the value social media can have for our businesses, brands, and even personal reputations, getting everyone who will be participating in the social stream up-to-speed on policies, best practices, and integrated strategies, can be the biggest challenge!

It helps to take a quick assessment of where we are currently with social media and then build the proper goals, efforts, monitoring, and measurement strategies from there. Here is a quick checklist of questions to ask ourselves:

  • Does your organization have a social media policy in place and are all employees aware of it?
  • Are your social media efforts integrated into the overall business or is it used for specific purposes?
  • Can anyone participate in social media within the organization or is it the responsibility of select roles?
  • How does your organization monitor social streams? And how are responses handled?
  • Does your organization have an established measurement strategy? How are benchmarks created and what’s measured?
  • Are members of management involved in the social streams?
  • Do you feel your organization is maximizing the use of social media or do you feel there are areas of improvement?

These are just a sampling of questions to ask ourselves as gear up for the year. And though many of these questions are applicable to different types of organizations, the truth is that each organization’s social media needs, structure, and efforts are unique…not to mention their employees’ social media skill sets vary across the spectrum. Some organizations have an established footing in social media while others are in the ramp up phase.

A Top Strategy in 2013: Making the Network Connections that Open Society

While in Oslo last month for the Nobel Peace Prize activities, I heard two words that I haven’t been able to get out of my mind: “open government”.

They were the focus of discussion among the 15 international delegates—representing 14 countries and 3 continents—that Cisco had invited to its  “Visioning Open Government” conference  The delegates and speakers delved into the value of an open society and its imperatives for social and digital network connections—including information access, integration, and network security.

Education Fast Forward Debate – “From Learner Voice to Emerging Leaders”

EFF_LogoEdu­ca­tion Fast For­ward (EFF), an orga­ni­za­tion, spon­sored jointly by Promethean and Cisco, that brings together lead­ing global experts and change agents from the world of edu­ca­tion to dis­cuss ‘the top­ics that mat­ter most’, wants to begin to change that by bring­ing together some artic­u­late and intel­li­gent voices from the world’s youth to dis­cuss issues that are rel­e­vant to young peo­ple them­selves and to their edu­ca­tion.

In July 2012, in the most recent of the five debates orga­nized by EFF to date, a group of elo­quent and youth­ful voices debated the topic ‘From Learner Voice to Global Peace’. The young peo­ple were located all across the globe and came together pri­mar­ily through the won­der of Telep­res­ence (TP), a high-definition video con­fer­enc­ing tech­nol­ogy. The dis­cus­sion that day was not only intel­li­gent and thought­ful: it was truly inspir­ing for every­one involved.

Celebrating the Gift – Cisco TelePresence connects, engages Los Angeles students

Choir_Compressed_BetterThis holiday season, the Urban Entertainment Institute, Cisco and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) have joined forces to address the achievement gap in education, the dropout rate and the need to keep performing arts in schools by integrating academics, arts and technology to bridge the cultural gap in education throughout the world.

Unprecedented budget pressures are forcing K-12 schools across the nation to think differently about how to deliver learning to their students. As such, we’re seeing a growing acceptance of collaboration technologies in schools to increase quality learning and engage students, and to relieve some financial pressures.

One such school district implementing Cisco TelePresence video systems is the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Serving some 700,000 students, LAUSD has deployed TelePresence to avoid cutting its arts programs, instead scaling the program across the large geographical area of Los Angeles and beyond with video.

Cisco’s Prediction of 2013 Education Technology Trends: The Big Three to Watch

IOE_Mini_Infographic_4131I believe that the New Year will signal three major shifts in education:  The Internet of Everything, Shared Services, and Cloud Computing.

We are rapidly moving into a phase that we call “The Internet of Everything.”  Today, there are more things connected to the internet than there are people in the world.  In the near future, everything that we see will wake up as more and more people, processes, data, and things join what we call the internet and change the way we work, live, learn, and play.  For education, this means that the experiences that we deliver to students will be more connected, integrated, flexible, and meaningful.  Students will increasingly learn on their own terms, quickly and easily accessing content, joining courses, and connecting with experts across the globe.  Connection will happen seamlessly; students will design their own learning experiences.  They will be empowered by public education networks and a multi-device mobile world.
