Greasing the Video Collaboration Skids

I talk to customers virtually everyday as part of my job, and even though they thoroughly believe in the operational and transformative benefits of video collaboration, they tell me there’s still more we can do to help simplify the process for implementing video pervasively. So, at Cisco’s Collaboration Summit last week, we unveiled a host of technologies designed to do just that – grease the skids for driving video collaboration everywhere using an intelligent approach that is connected, adaptive and intuitive.

Cisco’s strategy for enabling pervasive video is aligned around three key strategies and, as such, so do our product innovations:

Innovative Collaboration Tools for the Desk Worker

October 25, 2013 at 10:10 am PST

At Cisco, we’re committed to evolving and enhancing the collaboration user experience -- connecting you to the experts you need, regardless of location.  But user experience goes beyond that. It’s also thinking about ways to delight you -- with a simpler AND superior user experience. Whether that’s with high-definition voice and video on “every pane of glass”, to sharing content in meetings using your device of choice, to bringing the worlds of personal mobile devices and corporate IT owned and managed closer together.

Given the proliferation of mobile devices that have entered the workplace, you probably don’t find my comments around a focus on user experiences for the mobile worker too surprising. However, what I think might be surprising to you is that we’re placing an equivalent level of commitment to drive innovation on user experiences for the worker at the desk.

Why would we do this? I’ll tell you. Consider primary research we commissioned this past summer of 2300 global enterprise and mid-sized company end users and decision makers. The study indicated 70% of users work primarily from a desk 4-5 days per week. Read More »

Where do you do your best work?

Most of us have the ability to work in different places these days. I am personally very mobile. I love all my little tools -- I carry my Air, iPad and iPhone plus a few other bits whereever I go. Now, just because I can work anywhere does not mean that I always like to. Depends on what I need to get done. My home office space is my ideal working environment. This is the one spot I have invested the most time in making comfortable for me and as such, this is where I do my best work. For you, it may be your office at work.

Why?

I had never given much thought to why I like this space the most..it seems obvious…but one item that makes this spot ideal: my desk phone.

My desk phone is large, reliable and comfortable. It has an easy interface, great speakerphone and a good headset always attached. This communication device, sitting right next to my iMac, makes communication rich and easy. When I sit here -- I can get anything done. Anything.

So as silly as it seemed when I first heard it, the idea that Cisco was investing in the deskphone, now makes sense. Mobile phones, tablets..these are all obvious, well worn markets with lots of people fighting for a toe-hold. The desk phone? How delightfully contrarian. Cisco is really good in the business space..selling to consumers…not so much. But the enteprise…at all levels…have very unique needs.

Cisco’s move with the DX650 is brave, and based on what I have seen…really smart.

Enterprise Connect Recap: Smart Desk Phones, WebEx, TelePresence, and More!

April 9, 2013 at 3:48 pm PST

In March, I make an annual journey from Dallas to Orlando – not to visit that famous mouse or take a Spring break.  No, I am there with thousands of IT, telecom, and networking professionals who have descended upon Orlando to attend Enterprise Connect, the leading conference and expo on enterprise communications and collaboration.

This year, both Jimmy Ray and Robb (along with the amazing TechWiseTV crew) joined me to capture all of the excitement, announcements, and cool demos.

If you missed the conference, don’t fret.  We have all of the highlights here!

First, I caught up with Rob Lloyd immediately after his keynote to get the scoop on the Internet of Everything and how it will impact businesses.

How Partners Can Simplify Collaboration and Videoconferencing For Customers

March 20, 2013 at 5:01 am PST

While the use of collaboration across organizations continues to grow, there have still been a few barriers to adoption. Cisco is breaking down one of those barriers with this week’s announcement of simplified pervasive conferencing.

I’m excited to share that Cisco TelePresence is now WebEx enabled. This is another milestone in our effort to simplify the delivery of highly scalable, affordable multiparty collaboration for voice, video and web conferencing. Enabling conferencing on any standards-based video device is critical for people-centric collaboration, and helps companies focus on connecting people across any device and enabling productive conversations across teams, without technology getting in the way.
