As the first in the series of “Why I love Big Data blogs” with our Big Data and Analytics partners, I am pleased to have Cecile share how Hortonworks is working with Cisco to bring business solutions to our joint customers.

Guest Blogger: Cecile Poyet, Alliance Marketing Manager at Hortonworks

UntitledOne of the most exciting, yet challenging opportunities companies face today is related to data. Every year, they have to deal with about 40% more data than the year before. How does your organization take advantage and make sense of this exponentially growing resource?

Hortonworks and Cisco have been partnering to help you build massively scalable big data solutions that expand with your needs and provide you with an industry-leading platform for Hadoop-based applications.

Fully tested and certified, the Cisco UCS solution for HDP is based on UCS Integrated Infrastructure for Big Data, a highly scalable and efficient architecture designed to meet the demands of rapidly growing big data environments with cohesive data integration and powerful management-automation capabilities. With Cisco UCS Integrated Infrastructure for Big Data, we have helped enterprises smoothly integrate Hadoop with their computing, networking, and storage resources to run Hadoop clusters.

FlexPod

Cisco and NetApp have been teaming for several years developing the FlexPod solution portfolio. This portfolio includes architectures that combine NetApp storage systems, Cisco Unified Computing System servers, and Cisco Nexus fabric into an architecture that provides a highly efficient operational model for workload deployments. This architecture is capable of hosting mission critical SQL Server implementations and is capable of providing them with the required throughput and availability for even the most demanding business requirements.

Recently, Cisco and NetApp contracted Scalability Experts to implement a performance and load test that proves my claims in the above paragraph beyond any doubt in my mind.

Scalability Experts, for readers who may not be familiar with them, is a triple Gold Microsoft Partner, and highly awarded consulting company specializing in Data Platforms, Business Intelligence and Infrastructure Solutions. Scalability Experts conducted the performance and load testing over several months using real world workloads. More information on Scalability Experts can be found at http://www.scalabilityexperts.com/

The purpose of this performance and load test was to validate that FlexPod is a premiere platform for the most demanding applications. This performance and load test implements a real world gaming workload on Microsoft SQL Server 2014. Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate Edition was used to generate and run the performance and load tests. For more information about Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate Edition see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd831853.aspx. More information about Microsoft SQL Server 2014 can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/products/sql-server/.

An Open Framework for Hosting Multi Data Center Distributed Applications on the Cisco Cloud

Authors
Ken Owens (@kenowens12), Keith Chambers (@keithchambers), and Jason Plank (@_japlank_)

Over the last few years, we’ve heard a lot about ways of designing new software applications. Out of this, we’ve heard a lot about “Microservice Architecture” as a way to design these applications as individual components to make up an actual application. Refer back to this recent blog regarding the impact of microservices and containers on application enablement for the enterprise. Many attempts to define the architecture were undertaken, and in general the complexities of software platform and different viewpoints on the underlying components necessary have not resulted in an agreed solution.
