Technology, Kids and a Guinness World Record

On October 2, 2010, the day after Singapore celebrated Children’s Day, close to two thousand children and Cisco volunteers led by Edzard Overbeek, President of Cisco’s Asia Pacific and Japan theaters, created a little piece of history by attending the World’s Largest Art Lesson across 12 countries and 33 locations around the globe.

Sitting in Cisco’s Singapore office, Peter Draw, a gifted young artist with a passion to bring joy to the lives of underprivileged children through art, achieved his dream of reaching out to hundreds of children simultaneously thanks to Cisco’s technologies including TelePresence and WebEx.

The event was recognized by Guinness as a new world record but the real rewards lay in the squeals of laughter from the children who came from different backgrounds, different cultures and different nations; united for those few hours through a combination of technology and good old fashioned drawing.

Collaboratively written by Charlie Treadwell and Sushant Sahani as a summary of the Social Media Club – Silicon Valley chapter’s inaugural event titled Social Media for Social Good.

January 27, 2011 at 7:22 am PST

We’ve all seen the amazing innovation and mass adoption of mobile apps like Groupon, Foursquare and Yelp, but I’m starting to believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg. With mobile penetration in the developing world far surpassing wired, innovative people are beginning to use seemingly simple technology like SMS to drastically improve people’s lives.

Social Media Club Silicon Valley: Social Media for Social Good #smcsv

January 24, 2011 at 8:50 am PST

I’m participating in a panel discussion at PayPal on Thursday evening about using social media for social good. This is the inaugural meeting of the Social Media Club – Silicon Valley, and it will be a great opportunity to meet some social media professionals.

I’m extremely interested in this discussion, as I am only 3 months into my new role as Marketing Strategy Manager for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). I believe social media is powering a revolution in social causes today.

Please join us at this event if you’re in the bay area, and if you can’t make it, I’ll post a follow up blog and try to capture some video interviews.
