Patient Experience – Top of the Mind for Healthcare Organizations

October 29, 2012 at 1:32 pm PST

Back in September, I had the opportunity to attend HIMSS APJC in Singapore and was really excited to learn more about the key trends in that part of the world, which houses some of the largest economies, populations, and economic growth.  After talking with several customers and listening to several panel discussions, one common theme kept recurring – patient experience.  It was my belief that patient experience was more of a USA hot-button as healthcare organizations in the USA are being forced by patient “consumerism”, whereby patients want their money’s worth and have a certain level of expectation.  I was surprised to learn that patient experience is more of a global trend and that got me thinking as to what exactly is patient experience and how healthcare organizations are addressing it.

After talking with customers on a world-wide basis, I have learned that customers really do not have a standard definition for “patient experience”.  In fact each one of them has a different interpretation and there are widely divergent views in the healthcare industry.  The 2009 HealthLeaders Media Patient Experience Leadership Survey — covering more than 200 healthcare CEOs, CFOs, COOs, CNOs, directors, senior vice presidents, and other C-suite high-ranking healthcare officials — found that 33.5% of respondents said the patient experience is their “top priority,” and 54.5% said it’s “among their top five priorities.” And most responders thought it would be a priority in the future as well: 45% said it would be their top priority five years from now, and 50.5% said it would be in their top five priorities. Consumer Spending Priorities: Translating Consumers’ Broadband Addiction into Mobile Data Spending

By Gaetano Pellegrino, Senior Manager, IBSG Service Provider (Western Europe)

According to new research from the Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG), fixed broadband Internet access is the highest priority service in consumers’ entertainment and communication portfolio. Despite the advent of smartphones, they view mobile data as more expendable.

Cisco IBSG regularly tracks such issues in its Connected Life Market Watch research platform. In the fall 2011 edition, it surveyed some 3,900 broadband consumers in North America (including Canada) and France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

Consumers Love Their Smartphones—but Rely on Fixed Access

AT&T Sweeps IPTV World Forum Awards!

It’s been a great week for AT&T at the IP&TV World Forum, and by proxy, a great week for Cisco!

In case you hadn’t heard the word from “over the pond,” the IP&TV World Forum recognized AT&T with not one, but TWO accolades: Best TV App, for its U-verse for Tablet, and “Best Consumer Device,” for the U-Verse TV Wireless Receiver (built by guess who!)

The IP&TV Industry Awards, which occurred in London on the evening of March 21, honor service providers for their innovation, excellence, and achievement in the IPTV sector.

The AT&T Wireless Receiver, which launched across U-verse markets last October, is an IPTV set-top equipped with video-optimized Wi-Fi. From a consumer perspective, it means hanging the TV set anywhere, and not necessarily near a coaxial wall outlet — a no-wires way to arrange the TV to go with people’s lives, furniture, and living environments.

In Cisco-speak, we call this fabulous device the ISB7005 wireless DVR set-top, coupled with our VEN401 wireless access point. The former is a set-top that can go anywhere in the house; the latter is the video-optimized wireless access point.

So allow me to raise a (virtual) glass, on behalf of the hardworking team here at Cisco who helped make these technologies possible — and to our colleagues at AT&T, for making it happen! Clink and congrats.
