Cloud for Local Government Global Blog Series: State/Local Government & the Internet of Everything

There’s an increasing drumbeat of news about the “Internet of Everything” (IoE)— the confluence of people, process, data, and things that makes networked connections more relevant and valuable than ever before.

IoE comprises the ubiquitous ways that billions of people and numerous devices on the Internet communicate and report on their status and location. This covers everything from the location of your smartphone, to where a package might be, to the rate of your pulse or your arrival on a street corner, to the condition of a highway.

The Internet of Everything isn’t way off in the future. Today, the number of physical devices connected to the Internet is already six times the number of people on the Internet, even though there are 2 billion of those people. By 2020, there will be 50 billion connected devices.

These devices will come to dominate the “cloud.” Of course, the complexity of a global system that connects all these devices and people is mind-boggling. This global system has the potential for unpredictable and perhaps disastrous behavior. That alone should get the attention of public leaders.

Reflections from the Floor at NRF 2013

panoramaAfter a long day of showing the Cisco BYOD Smart Solution and Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences solutions at the 2013 National Retail Federation (NRF) trade show, I am waiting for a colleague to meet me for a well-deserved dinner. I had many, and yes there were MANY, conversations with Retail IT professionals,  and nearly every conversation I had seemed to revolve around the same two problems:

  1. How do I allow employees and / or customers to access the network when I don’t have dedicated local IT support?
  2. How do I give up the control and make sure my security and compliance requirements are met?

We know almost all organizations are struggling with BYOD, but it’s now clear that the lack of local IT support adds a new dimension to the problem. With the increased adoption of mobility, there’s also the added complexity of security and compliance, and with all the connected consumers walking around, it’s becoming a growing concern in the retail space. Retail organizations want to take advantage of the promise that leveraging Wi-Fi access to engage with employees and customers, but fear the management and security of such services.

Fortunately, Cisco is addressing both these issues with its mobility solutions.

You Can’t Wait for Connected Mobile Experiences

Ten billion. That’s the estimated number of connected devices by 2016. That’s more than the whole world population today. According to data from the Cisco Visual Networking Index, mobile connection speeds and data use are anticipated to rise with this influx of smartphones, tablets and laptop computers. Mobile device users are increasingly always on, always connected, using their smartphones at work and at play—Can anyone say BYOD?

Mobility doesn’t just take the office beyond our cubicles—it weaves itself into our everyday lives—mobility keeps us connected. Cisco is working with enterprises, service providers, mobile software partners and mobile app developers to deliver Connected Mobile Experiences to end-users. Sujai Hajela discusses the concept of The Connected Mobile Experience and our partnerships on The Platform.

What’s in it for the enterprise?

As consumers tote their mobile devices into malls, airports, hotels, and other venues around the world, businesses see new opportunities to improve and personalize the consumer experience, generate new revenue streams and enhance business operations.

Businesses are looking for location-based services that can provide new ways to interact with the current 6 billion mobile device users worldwide. This means there is an opportunity to develop a solution that connects businesses to those connected mobile consumers.

That’s why we’re announcing Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences, a wireless solution to help you engage your customers while they’re in your venue with context-aware, personalized mobile services.

Sound too good to be true? It’s real.

Armed with Qualcomm for indoor-location capabilities, 3rd party vendors for mobile app technology, and  Cisco for context-aware location solution with real-time analytics, Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences gives indoor venues the means to target their consumers in real-time and helps businesses more effectively understand and reach their customers, provide the right content at the right time, and generate revenue.

Connected Public Sector: Being There in Every Situation

This weekend, as the United States celebrates Veterans Day, Cisco’s Global Government team would like to thank all those who have and continue to serve.

The world is continuously changing, bringing new and complex challenges and now, more than ever, communities and citizens need and expect a connected government, one that will enable local government to be there to help, to serve and to protect, no matter what the circumstance.

A connected government is about creating new possibilities for citizens and employees. It’s about breaking down silos between agencies and departments, providing cost-effective solutions, increasing operational efficiencies, and delivering better, faster, real-time services. It’s about understanding how the world is changing, and adapting to that change with scalable, long term, solutions made possible through technology.

As governments of today face these variety of challenges, new and innovative approaches are being implemented and some local governments are leading the way by deploying cloud and mobility solutions to overcome these challenges in a collaborative and timely manner.

Our latest public sector video highlights some examples of how these challenges are being addressed globally.
