Not many of us would expect to get free Wi-Fi when standing on the top of the mountain at a ski resort. Spark New Zealand (formerly Telecom New Zealand) provides just that to their customers who have come to expect quality of experience everywhere, anytime.
By deploying Cisco Service Provider Wi-Fi, Spark NZ has expanded wireless services to their customers from the Auckland city streets to the top of Coronet Peak, allowing their mobile customers to enjoy access to an additional network as they work and play. The Spark Ventures group works in start-up mode – moving quickly and putting the customer first to offer new services. Their innovation started by putting Wi-Fi in phone boxes on the street, and they proceeded to follow their customers as they grew the network footprint.

Next week in Los Angeles, our team will be at HITEC 2014, the world’s largest hospitality technology show. This year, we are once again sponsoring the wireless network at the Los Angeles Convention Center, so wireless Internet connectivity at the show is free to attendees in the pre-convention areas. Our advanced Wi-Fi technologies and free Wi-Fi access will be offered in the exhibitor space and the Digital Den (conveniently located right outside the Exposition) and common areas of the event center. Every guest in attendance will experience the reliability and convenience of Cisco’s network in real-time.

I’m a huge advocate for flexible work practices including the ability to work from wherever and whenever you want, and think those who attempt to run businesses the ‘old fashioned’ way will fall behind if they fail to recognize the effects of mobility in both their workforce and their bottom lines.
The impact of mobility became clear to us when we discovered that space utilization of our own 22.5Mft2 global property was just at 50 percent. And it’s not just happening at Cisco. According to a CoreNet study, nearly 60 percent of a company’s desks are vacant at any given time and the growing mobility trend is a major reason why. Taking all of this into consideration, I think the question that corporate real estate and facilities leaders need to focus on is, “why aren’t we working with IT leaders to build the workplace of the future?”
Mobility and the Changing Landscape
Most employees can now work from anywhere on any device and have access to most content. We’re seeing this “wherever you are is your office” trend actually increases productivity and I would even argue that employees who don’t commute actually work more hours on company business. With mobility and bring your own device (BYOD) taking such a strong hold within the workplace, data collection has been accelerating at an exponential rate – so much so that by 2018, Read More »

Mobility trend in Hospitality
A recent TripAdvisor survey found that over 40% of travelers use their smart phones to plan a trip and over 46% use their smart phones to enhance their trip while traveling.
No longer is it just an idea or an aspiration for the hospitality industry to use innovative methods to engage with their guests, for example Marriott Hotels, just this year, announced the addition of mobile checkout to its industry-leading Marriott Mobile app for smartphones. Clearly mobile check-out is just the latest innovation from the brand as a new service designed for today’s connected travelers. Read More »
