Cisco recently released the latest version of our VNI Forecast, a 5-year look ahead at data traffic growth trends. I caught up with Kevin McElearney, SVP Network Engineering at Comcast, to talk about the implications this latest VNI Forecast has for Comcast’s planning. For many students, this time of the year marks “Spring Break”. (Ah, just the thought of this brings back fun memories…) However, once you get past the stereotypical party imagery, it really is a time of assessment. With the CDN World Summit coming up this week in London (Oct 26-28), it seems a good time to describe something that’s been a working passion of mine: CDNI, where the “I” stands for “Interconnect.”
What’s CDNI? It’s a new working group within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), co-chaired by myself and my colleague Rich Woundy, Senior VP/Software and Applications for Comcast. The working group mission is to develop standards for the interconnection of CDNs run by different operators, so they can inter-operate and collectively provide a multi-footprint CDN — thereby pooling resources that are owned and operated by multiple operators.
It’s all about how to link up the world’s CDNs, so that they can exchange information and work collectively. Just like the Internet was about linking up the world’s IP networks.
It was only a matter of time before DOCSIS 3.0 swept the cable industry. The benefits that DOCSIS 3.0 IP capabilities can deliver—more content, more mobility, more personalization, all at a lower cost—are simply too great to ignore. That industry evolution is now picking up speed, and I’m happy to report that Cisco is leading the pack in DOCSIS 3.0 technologies.
ACG Research (ACG Market Release 2Q11 Worldwide Video Infrastructure) found similar results, stating that Cisco’s CMTS market share grew by nearly 3 points last quarter to a commanding 65.8 percent of the market. Read More »
