I just caught up with some colleagues who were present at the Cisco Live 2013 event just held in Melbourne, Australia, 5-8 March, 2013. “It was a great success for both Cisco and the Connected Industries Group”, said Guy Denis, one of the experts who has just returned from Australia.
You probably saw my earlier blog telling you that The Cisco Connected Industries Group (CIG) were at Cisco Live!, and I just got word that over 3,000 attended over the four days in Melbourne. There was strong interest in follow-up meetings by over a hundred folks who were keenly interested in mining and Oil and Gas, in addition to Manufacturing. Not surprising really, as the region has a solid industry in these three areas. Many folks were very interested in the 819 for 4G mobile assets (think earth movers and that kind of thing), and the IE2000 was well received.
The Keynote by Carlos Dominguez (the opening speech of the event) featured the Internet of Everything (IoE) and The Internet of Things (IoT) with industrial use cases and the network in mind. Read More »

Check out the Connected Industries presence at Cisco Live Australia, 2013.
Cisco Connected Industries are present in Melbourne showing off some of the latest ruggedized equipment that Cisco has for industrial users such as those in the manufacturing, Oil and Gas, and Mining sectors.
There’s a static display of equipment to allow customers to “touch and feel” all models of the Industrial Ethernet range: IE3000, IE2000, IE3010, C819, AIR1552, ESR5915, ESR5940.
There will also be h a great demo session focused on real-time mobile data collection in the mining industry (to show a harsh environment application).
The demonstration utilizes the Cisco 819 M2M router and Cisco Industrial Ethernet switches to show how telemetry can be collected from a mining vehicle and back-hauled over a Cisco wireless mesh infrastructure to a central data center. The data can be securely monitored for abnormal fluctuations from a remote location using Cisco’s VPN and ASA Firewall technologies. The detection of an abnormality can be used to generate warning alerts via management systems, IP Telephony and Instant Messaging. Cool huh? Now that’s Connected Manufacturing! (or Connected Mining in this case!).
Can’t make it to Melbourne this year? Then register for Cisco Live 365 and get all the session action on your desktop!

Cisco Internet of Things Partner Pavilion
Cisco Live is taking place right now in London, UK Jan 28 -- Feb 1, 2013. Located in front of the Internet of Things area on the Borderless Networks section of the Cisco Campus, the Cisco Internet of Things Partner Pavilion brings together a number of Cisco’s flagship industrial partners and demonstrates key technologies and their application in creating real-world solutions.
Partners in this Pavilion are part of an extensive and growing ecosystem highlighting the value they and Cisco can bring to industrial industries such as Oil and Gas, Mining, Manufacturing, Transportation and Automotive.
Here’s a run down of key Industrial Partners at the IoT Partner Pavilion:
Emerson’s Smart Wireless products and solutions extend PlantWeb predictive intelligence into areas that were previously out of physical or economic reach, opening the door for new possibilities in process improvement. Remote locations, physical obstructions, and the high cost of engineering and integrating new technologies are no longer the barriers they were.
Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) is the global leader in process automation and control solutions and has been a pioneer in these areas for more than 35 years. HPS serves the oil & gas, refining, pulp & paper, power generation, chemicals and petrochemicals, life sciences and metals, minerals and mining industries.
PANDUIT is a world-class developer and provider of leading-edge solutions that help customers optimise the physical infrastructure through simplification, agility and operational efficiency. Connected Industries Booth
It was great to see the Cisco Connected Industries Booth that I blogged about recently humming at Cisco Live this week. Lots of delegates interested in talking about Converged Plant-wide networks, Machine-to-Machine applications and technologies, and all the different network sensing, diagnostic and management capabilities of our Partners such as Rockwell Automation, Panduit Corp, Emerson , OSIsoft LLC and Honeywell Process Solutions.
Maciej Kranz, CIBU VP, talks to attendees
I videoed a few of the demos and will talk about them in future blogs, but I wanted to share some great images from the booth, and also from the ‘Table-Topics’ I helped moderate on Tuesday and Wednesday. Some delegates really get the trends and are on their way to implemented open standards networks throughout their organizations. During the Table topics a pharmaceutical company and a utilities company talked about ‘Wireless in Manufacturing’ and the direction they were taking. There are challenges ahead and we talked about how Cisco was helping to tackle some of the key ones -- security and manageability came out tops, so Cisco’s Secure-X architecture advances were appreciated.
Table Topics provides a relaxed discussion
The Rockwell Robot, the OSIsoft PI software, the Panduit solutions and the Emerson and Honeywell sensor networks booths (Wireless Hart and ISA100 respectively) were all big draws, as were the new IE2000 hardened switches from Cisco. There was huge interest in the M2M demonstrations and the way the ‘Internet of Things’ is becoming as huge as the 2008 forecasts predicted.
The Cisco Live event is a mixture of learning, networking and discussion. If you get a chance to attend you’ll meet folks from all over the world and see that the challenges and solutions are often not that different between countries or organizations.
Watch out for my next blogs where I go into more depth on the demonstrations and messaging from Cisco.

It’s that time of year again when we all gather for Cisco Live US to share the latest and greatest in the world of IT and networking. This year the event is being held in San Diego, and there are 17,000 in-person attendees—a new record! One of my favorite things about Cisco Live is that I have a chance to interact one-on-one with customers, partners, and analysts. When I do, the topic of the cloud invariably is on their minds.
Of course many already know about the Cisco CloudVerse strategy and solution set, which is based on the Unified Data Center, Cloud Intelligent Network, and Cloud Applications and Services, all of which are supported by Cisco and partner professional services. What they might not know about, however, are all of the advancements Cisco has made to make cloud networks truly intelligent since last December when we originally announced CloudVerse.
Yesterday here at Cisco Live, we announced Cisco Cloud Connected Solution as the latest innovation in the Cloud Intelligent Network. This solution adds a host of capabilities to your already existing network infrastructure, allowing you to take full advantage of cloud computing. A number of new capabilities were introduced, but my personal favorites are the Cloud Connectors and the new Read More »
