Cisco Announces Acquisition of Assemblage

Collaboration technology gives us the ability to work together anywhere, on any device, at any time. With more and more people using smartphones and tablets to do their work, it is more important than ever that enterprise collaboration delivers high quality voice, video, chat and online sharing instantly, to any device on any platform.

Today, I am pleased to announce Cisco’s acquisition of Assemblage to help us capture the ongoing market transitions of mobility, cloud and the Internet of Everything (IoE). Assemblage has built a talented team of web developers to deliver the tools and the infrastructure to enable simple, real-time collaboration through the browser to any device, without the need for downloads, plugins, or installations.

Assemblage offers real-time collaboration apps for shared whiteboarding, presentation broadcasting and screensharing. Users are able to collaborate simply via their browser with one-click, instantly accessing collaboration apps delivered via the cloud. Assemblage’s technology also integrates with popular third party cloud services and supports 40 different file types to enable quick and efficient collaboration.

With this acquisition, Assemblage brings a strong team of engineers with deep web development expertise to Cisco’s Collaboration Technology Group (CTG), enabling Cisco to accelerate innovation and develop simple, easy to use, next generation collaboration solutions. In addition, Assemblage’s experience integrating with third party cloud ecosystem applications like Box and Google shows a close alignment to Cisco’s collaboration strategy and our commitment to simplicity and interoperability.

We are excited to welcome Assemblage to our collaboration team. Together, Cisco and Assemblage will provide simple, easy-to-use solutions that help employees work smarter together from virtually anywhere.

How Intercloud May Extend Cisco’s Leadership in Collaboration

Wow!  Last week was a big week for Cloud news.   Whilst Amazon Web Service, Microsoft and Google started a price war or ‘race to the bottom’ for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) services, Cisco came out with a potentially industry-shaping announcement around Cloud Services.

On March 24th Cisco announced plans to build the world’s largest global Intercloud together with a set of partners to create a network of clouds.  This is not a trivial investment, Cisco expects to invest more than $1 billion in its cloud business over the next two years.  This ‘Intercloud’ will feature APIs for rapid application development and will deliver a new enterprise-class portfolio of cloud IT services.

Cisco’s overall strategy for the cloud is based on the premise that there will be a “world of many clouds.” My colleague Fabio Gori wrote a great blog describing how Intercloud is the critical enabler to capture the immense value of the Internet of Everything (IoE).  In this post, Fabio provides a clear summary of how we see Intercloud impacting the next phase of cloud computing, the IoE and ultimately how we all collaborate.

Intercloud and Collaboration

Gartner consistently places Cisco in the Leaders Quadrant for Unified Communications, and we think the Intercloud can help us further extend our leadership by enabling our partners to offer even better experiences, on multiple devices, and across multiple platforms by connecting the world of many collaboration clouds.    Read More »

Getting Beyond “Why Cloud For Collaboration?”

Why should I move to the cloud for collaboration? This is the question I get asked most often, and it’s easy to understand why;  there is a lot of noise in the market around Cloud and Collaboration.  Adoption has been pretty rapid by both IT and business units–so it’s no wonder interest in Cloud Collaboration is so high.  Looking across all the current research that I see, about half of respondents currently use -- or plan to use -- the cloud for collaboration services.   So why Cloud?  Well, often it helps solve a series of problems, provides a more integrated solution and better connects people.  Often the biggest reason is that it provides what’s needed to run the business.

Perhaps instead of focusing on ‘cloud’ per se, you should focus on your business.  What business challenges could the cloud help you solve?  Customers I speak to are often looking to reduce complexity, control costs or make them more predictable, and become more agile.   In our discussions Read More »

What Business Executives Say: Cloud Collaboration Leads to Real Business Results

To help us understand what business executives think about ‘the cloud’ and the impact of cloud collaboration to their businesses, we asked Forbes Insights to conduct research.  In response, Forbes surveyed over 500 senior executives from global companies with sales ranging from $250 million to over $20 billion, and interviewed 15 executives.  The study examined the ways business executives increasingly look at cloud collaboration as a way to increase productivity, accelerate business results, and enhance innovation and collaboration across borders and functions. We weren’t surprised by the positive response to cloud, but some new and very interesting findings opened our eyes.
