Wi-Fi has truly come of age as a viable means to connect mobile devices to the Internet. The past four blogs in this series have highlighted some of the key findings of a recent survey of U.S. mobile users by Cisco’s Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG). Our survey uncovered some startling revelations about what consumers are doing on their mobile devices, how and where they are using them, and how they are connecting them to the Internet.
The majority of devices are now Wi-Fi-enabled, and the fastest-growing category is “nomadic” devices such as tablets and eReaders. We now need to speak of the “mobile home,” as the home is by far the most popular location for consumers to use their mobile devices. Surprisingly, Wi-Fi is the network connection of choice for most consumers for all of their devices, but they would like to see Wi-Fi more seamlessly integrated with mobile networks. When they are not at home, mobile users are increasingly expecting public hotspots to provide Wi-Fi connectivity to these devices. While service providers are beginning to realize that they need to deploy Wi-Fi networks, our research clearly shows that there are viable monetization opportunities in mobile data off-load, customer retention, and new and innovative business models.

Ten to fifteen percent of America’s homeless population is chronically homeless. Yet they utilize more than 50 percent of public resources available to help the homeless. Housing people permanently reconnects them to society and amounts to annual savings of US$30,000 to US$40,000 per family in New York City, money that could potentially support other city services.
Community Solutions is a leading social enterprise, assessing the roots of homelessness and addressing them with long-term solutions. Partnering with Community Solutions, Cisco’s New York City public sector team is tapping a broad range of Cisco’s assets--human and technology--to help end homelessness. At the same time, they are achieving the business aim of better understanding their customers’ mission and having greater, more meaningful impact as a business partner.
On June 11, Gary Moore, Cisco’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, announced the appointment of Edzard Overbeek to head the company’s Global Services Business. Today, I am delighted to announce that Jaime Vallés, currently senior vice president for Cisco’s Latin America theater, will be taking over from Edzard as the leader of our Asia Pacific, Japan and Greater China (APJC) region. Jaime will assume the position with effect of August 1, 2012 and will be based in Singapore.
Asia Pacific, Japan and Greater China represent a huge opportunity for future growth and innovation for Cisco. We are pleased to have identified such a strong successor to Edzard Overbeek, and Jaime’s appointment from within Cisco is a testament to the strength of our leadership team across the world. Jaime’s broad understanding and success in driving growth in both developed and emerging markets combined with his passion and ability to build and lead high-performing teams, and create strong relationships based on trust and integrity, make him the ideal choice to lead Cisco’s APJC team in the region’s next phase of growth.
Naturally, Jaime will have the support of the world-class Cisco leadership team across the region, and will partner closely with Owen Chan, who will continue to lead our business in Greater China.
Since Jaime joined Cisco back in 2007, he has proven himself to be an outstanding leader with a successful track record of driving growth in emerging markets. Named one of the Top 50 Technology Executives in Latin America by the Hispanic IT Executive Council in 2011, Jaime has successfully led Cisco’s operations in Latin America, making it one of our highest growth regions. He brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in the IT industry, having previously served in senior leadership positions at Sun Microsystems and IBM.
Latin America continues to be an important growth driver in the Americas sales region. Accelerating our growth in emerging countries is one of the company’s top priorities for FY13 and we will soon be announcing a new leader for the LatAm theater.
