Virtualization: Enabling Availability and Efficiency in Higher Education

Imagine a school where computer labs are obsolete. Imagine if every student had their own personalized workspace, without having to rely on their school’s computers. Imagine if schools or colleges could avoid upgrading, maintaining, and housing thousands of computer units; network administrators could update programs and information available on every student’s device with the click of a button, and students could use their personalized desktops at anytime from anywhere. Many institutions around the world are beginning to embrace technologies that transform this dream into a reality, and often times, this transformation is one made out of necessity.

I’m currently third year student at the University of Oregon and a Cisco intern. I support Cisco’s Education Marketing Team. While at Cisco, I’ve been able to observe many forward-thinking higher education institutions and compare their initiatives to my own education experiences. The following passage notes the successes had by two higher education institutions when implementing virtualization programs into their IT systems.

Cisco announced today a study showing benefits, as well as complexities, relating to employees bringing their own devices (BYOD) to work.  A colleague of mine forwarded this cartoon to me last week which I thought was quite amusing.  It gave me all kinds of thoughts about my upcoming doctor’s visit.

Cisco is enabling BYOD by driving innovation through Unified Workspace, everything that makes workers efficient and productive moves along with them.  Cisco is also offering three Smart Solutions, the BYOD, VXI and Remote Expert, all designed to help service provider and enterprises develop a scalable approach to their mobility initiatives while optimizing user experience and ensuring data security. New Virtual Desktop Solutions Enable High-Quality Voice and Video

Did you know that the hosted virtual desktop market is expected to reach 15 percent of the worldwide enterprise desktop and laptop market by 2014? That means over the next few years, more and more of your customers will be looking to deploy virtual desktops using a solution that is scalable, reliable, and secure. With new products from Cisco and Citrix, you can equip your customers with the best desktop virtualization experience.

Today Cisco has unveiled the next phase of its Virtualization Experience Infrastructure (VXI), enabling an uncompromised virtual desktop experience. Endpoints that are now available enable high-quality voice and video in virtual desktop environments.

Additionally, through a strategic alliance, Cisco and Citrix will improve virtual desktop end user experiences by offering solutions that ease the deployment of high-definition virtual desktops over a highly secure, “Citrix optimized” Cisco network.  Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) has been optimized for Citrix XenDesktop to  help your customers reduce the bandwidth necessary to deploy desktops virtually over wide area networks (WAN), enabling better scalability and optimal end-user collaboration experiences.

Here are additional details about what’s new:
