Executives Discuss Real-World Use Case for Cisco UPOE

June 27, 2012 at 11:47 am PST

Cisco UPOE doubles the power delivered per port over PoE+ to 60 Watts. Cisco UPOE can extend resilient network power to a broad range of devices including virtual desktop terminals, nurse call systems, IP turrets for financial trading, compact switches, building management gateways, LED lights, wireless access points, IP Phones, and more.

Watch Adam McMullin, Vice President and General Manager of Hill-Rom IT Solutions and Sachin Gupta, Senior Director of Product Management in Cisco’s Unified Access team discuss real-world use case of Cisco UPOE for medical networks in this 3-minute video. Read More »

Introducing Cisco UPOE Healthcare Solution

June 11, 2012 at 4:54 pm PST

Healthcare providers are increasingly turning to information technology to address major trends sweeping the healthcare industry, such as:

  • Pressure to reduce costs
  • The need for increased access to patient records to drive superior outcomes
  • Heightened concern for  security and privacy

In fact, a recent survey of 200 healthcare IT professionals and 202 caregivers -- doctors and nurses -- at large hospitals found that 84 percent of caregivers believe health care IT improves the care of patients. The same survey also found that hospitals fail to realize the full benefits of their IT systems. For example, they correctly emphasize investments in endpoints, but they do not make adequate investments in the networking, compute and storage infrastructure.

Cisco has partnered with industry leader Hill-Rom to bridge this divide between endpoint systems/applications and networking/compute infrastructure. Cisco leads the industry in Ethernet switching for enterprise networks, and now offers the same standards-based switching technology for medical networks through Cisco UPOE Healthcare Solution in partnership with Hill-Rom. Healthcare providers can now eliminate the cost and complexity of managing separate corporate and medical networks by converging them into one Cisco network. The Cisco UPOE Healthcare Solution includes:

Universal Power over Ethernet

UPOE, or Universal Power over Ethernet, is the latest innovation from Cisco with broad, positive implications for many enterprise operations. We are not new at this. Cisco has been pushing the standards since 2000 for the incorporation of electrical power running on the same cable as data.

UPOE is a big milestone as we can now consolidate 60 watts on a single CAT5E cable.   The flexibility that this enables cannot be overstated. Multiple third party vendors are jumping into the ecosystem here as dynamic environments using Virtual Desktops with integrated monitors, IP Turret systems for trading floors, not to mention building management, physical security and host of networking devices such as AP’s and compact switches that are often installed in very obscure locations.

The Catalyst 4500E is the initial beneficiary of this industry first for Cisco and this episode of TechWiseTV covers not just the use case and deployment examples as we go hands on with the big switch, but also a unique deep dive into understanding just how this works. A full appreciation for the engineering talent behind this innovation is warranted on this one when we go beyond the power negotiation and get into the physics of heat dissipation and other hurdles that had to be overcome. It’s the action packed TechWiseTV you have come to expect!

Cisco UPOE Powers Catalyst C-Series Compact Switches

Leading the industry in POE innovation, the Cisco Catalyst 4500E extends the IEEE POE+ standard with Cisco Universal Power Over Ethernet (Cisco UPOE) to deliver up to 60 Watts per switch port. This gives Cisco customers the deployment flexibility to power a new array of equipment, including Cisco Catalyst Compact Switches.

Today, Cisco announced orderability of the Catalyst 3560CPD-8PT Compact Switch. It is an 8 port GE Compact Switch, which can be powered by Cisco UPOE . This switch also supports PoE Pass-through, which can power downstream devices directly.  The 3560CPD-8PT is designed to support unified communications, wireless, IP video, and other applications for retail, hospitality, education, and enterprise customer. This new compact switch is designed specifically to be placed outside the wiring closet, and contains a number of innovative features that give customers flexibility in switch placement and end device support as well as advanced security services and ease of management features.

With Cisco UPOE to power the Catalyst Compact Switches, Cisco customers benefit from networked data and power resiliency and lowered TCO while simplifying their power and IT cabling infrastructure.
