Like mentioned last week, there will be a number of new Cisco Small Business products coming out in the next few weeks and months. The theme we are using is “Connect More”.
But why, “Connect More”?
The new Cisco Small Business products, including new switching, wireless access points, and of course the routers, help you connect to more endpoints, devices, applications, workstation computers, laptops, servers, the cloud, the internet, heck, we can connect you (and of course, your small business) to just about anything. Except for maybe the Wimbledon Singles Trophy or the Stanley Cup.
But, it is why we are doing what we do. We want you to connect to more, easier and more effectively, and securely. We want more options for you and your small business. Coming soon, there are More 802.11ac wireless access points, indoor and outdoor, even a wall-plate AP , filling out the already strong wireless portfolio. New switches are coming. New routing includes new DSL/Ethernet combo WAN’s models, one the first with 802.11 AC in the portfolio, the other at about $150USD.
We will be sharing more details as the launch dates arrive.
Today I am here to tell you all about the new RV320 and RV325 with web filtering. But why web filtering for your small business?
There are a couple of reasons: a. Prevent Internet Abuse at your business. b. Keep your network users away from potentially bad websites loaded with malicious gunk; in general keep your network in good health. c. Keep your users producing. d. Manage your business website policy effectively, in a coupe of clicks.
In general, safeguarding your network and your users makes sense, business sense. It’s easy to set-up as you will see in the below video. you can categorize sites, set protection levels, enable website reputations, and even schedule when the service is on.
These new models will join the existing RV320 and RV325 models and will be on the shelf for you around mid-to-late February. Not all regions will get these, so please consult with your local Cisco Small Business Partner.

Hope you all are enjoying a productive week. This week I thought it would be prudent to talk about upgrading router (+switch and wireless access point) firmware. The firmware is software that is embedded on the router. This firmware is normally updated to include new features and enhancements to the device. All of our firmware upgrades are FREE.
So take a look at a quick Knowledge Base article (based in our fabulous support forum) on upgrading the firmware on the new RV130 and RV130W: https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/12318721/firmwarelanguage-upgrade-rv130-and-rv130w-using-web-interface.
You will need to download the firmware to your computer and connect an ethernet cable from computer to your router.

You may not realize this, but Cisco has a thriving business building and selling networking products specifically designed for Small Businesses. Unfortunately, we know dealing with Cisco can sometimes be challenging for some smaller customers, a good example of this is managing software. Sometimes, it can be quite challenging to finding out whether equipment is running the latest software, and if not, how to get the latest software.
We recently announced a new feature called Automatic Service Delivery (ASD) on the RV215W, a wireless-n VPN Router that is in the Cisco Small Business Routing Portfolio.
The Automated Software Delivery service allows network devices such as the Cisco RV215W router or management tools such as Cisco FindIT to automatically retrieve software release information and software images from the cisco.com software library. This means that the user can be notified when a new software image is available, and they can obtain that software at the click of a button, rather than having to find their way through the thousands of files in the software library. If the user so chooses, a device can even automatically update itself, thereby ensuring the network is always running the most current versions of software.
This work was completed by our Smart Web Technology Group (SWTG). The API they developed enables client applications to retrieve vital software release and image information including release note, field notices and PSIRT information.
In order to gain access to this new feature, simply download the latest RV215W firmware form the RV215W product page and enable automatic updates on the Administration > Firmware/Language Upgrade page.

This is the case even though we ship well over 20 million switch ports delivering hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue per year in this portfolio – to customers in all geographies, markets, verticals, and customer types.
Which products are we talking about? It’s the Cisco SMB portfolio.
See what independent testing agency, Miercom, found when they compared Cisco 300 Series Switches (SG300) to other switches in the market from competitors – Miercom lab test report.

Over this last year, here’s a small sampling of additional features Cisco has added to the 300 Series portfolio in addition to what has been tested in the Miercom lab (a free software download for customers, I might add):
- Web-based Authentication – Provides network admission control through a web browser to any host devices and operating systems
- IPv6 First Hop Security – Protection against man-in-the-middle attack, malicious or rogue devices, and IP address theft
- RA Guard
- ND Inspection
- DHCPv6 Guard
- Neighbor Binding Integrity
- UDLD – detect unidirectional links caused by incorrect wiring or cable/port faults to prevent forwarding loops and black-holing of traffic in switched networks.
- Time-based POE – time-based shutdown of ports or POE for operational cost savings

So more features means it costs more, right? Nope. These Cisco switches are actually just as affordable—and in many/most cases, even more affordable — than Competitive switches. See for yourself. Here’s a few examples of comparable products you can look up:
