“Wow, I had no idea Cisco had these products”

As the product owner, one comment I get most of all is “Wow, I had no idea Cisco had these products“. This is the case even though we ship well over 20 million switch ports delivering hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue per year in this portfolio – to customers in all geographies, markets, verticals, and customer types.

Which products are we talking about? It’s the Cisco SMB portfolio.

See what independent testing agency, Miercom, found when they compared Cisco 300 Series Switches (SG300) to other switches in the market from competitors -- Miercom lab test report.

Over this last year, here’s a small sampling of additional features Cisco has added to the 300 Series portfolio in addition to what has been tested in the Miercom lab (a free software download for customers, I might add):

  • Web-based Authentication - Provides network admission control through a web browser to any host devices and operating systems
  • IPv6 First Hop Security – Protection against man-in-the-middle attack, malicious or rogue devices, and IP address theft
    • RA Guard
    • ND Inspection
    • DHCPv6 Guard
    • Neighbor Binding Integrity
  • UDLD - detect unidirectional links caused by incorrect wiring or cable/port faults to prevent forwarding loops and black-holing of traffic in switched networks.
  • Time-based POE - time-based shutdown of ports or POE for operational cost savings

 So more features means it costs more, right? Nope. These Cisco switches are actually just as affordable—and in many/most cases, even more affordable — than Competitive switches. See for yourself. Here’s a few examples of comparable products you can look up:

Meet Jeanne Quinn: A Well-Rounded Social Media Luminary

Jeanne leads the Cisco Global Partner Marketing and Small Business teams with an optimal social plan to help the teams deliver business results and increase their work effectiveness.

Leading and managing the social media strategy for Global Partner Marketing and Small Business is Jeanne’s specialty.  Throughout the years, she has been pivotal on educating the Partner Marketing and Sales teams about everything related to social media including the benefits of using it, implementation methods, best practices and alignment of resources for ongoing support.

Beyond that, Jeanne is the cornerstone for developing a social strategy for partners, working collaboratively with communication teams to ensure there is a cohesive message to partners, and what we hear from partners via social listening is fed back into the business. Her team is piloting innovations using the Social Hub to improve how we respond what we hear from social listening, and tying partner social profile data from Social Login with our Channel Marketing Database.  She also talks to partners about effective listening and how it can help their overall marketing strategy.

Cisco Celebrates Small Business Week

We’ve said it before, small business is big business.  Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has proclaimed National Small Business Week to recognize the contributions of small businesses to the economic well-being of America. They make invaluable contributions to the country’s economy in many ways, including creating 60-80 percent of new jobs. This week celebrates National Small Business Week and Cisco celebrates Small Business too.  Small businesses are a driving force of innovation, and technology plays a big part in enabling those efforts.  All week, on our Small Business blog we’ll be shining the spotlight on small businesses that have put technology to work for them to help them succeed. Why Small Business is Serious Business: Cisco continues Portfolio Expansion

You’ve heard us say it before, there’s nothing small about the small business initiative at Cisco. Rick Moran, our WW vice president of SB Solutions Marketing, has this week been discussing our latest news with ‘connect’ and ‘secure’ products focused on Small Business with analysts from across the globe.

The launch this week is particularly exciting as it includes a expansion of the “built for small” portfolio with a range of Ethernet switches, a business-class network security Firewall as well as a backup Service for storage products and the financing offers and options for small business to go with them.

It’s an exciting time for small businesses to evaluate their needs – there are lots of challenges for growing businesses to overcome, but lots of solutions to those needs as well. And yes… cost is a major component of successfully running IT, that’s why Cisco Capital is currently offering competitive financing for small business customers so they can get the technology they need to stay competitive and profitable. Three-year, 3 percent financing in the U.S and zero-percent financing in Europe and Canada is now available to small business customers.

Of course, we’re always listening to our customers, acting on their feedback and developing new solutions that can help drive their business performance to the next level. Analyst feedback is a great prism through which we can look at the challenges, and opportunities for small businesses, and so discussions with analysts really build on this process and are an invaluable part of helping us to push ourselves and our products as far as possible.

Our latest discussions re-iterated many of the key things that matter to a small business – good value, ease of use and reliability. Small business remain hungry for advice on how they can innovate, while keeping things simple. For example, we recently ran a Talk2 Cisco webinar session  on how small businesses can gain an edge on the competition. Ian Pennell, senior vice president for Cisco’s small business technology group and co-lead of Cisco’s small business council, and Andrew Sage, vice president, worldwide small business sales, enjoyed discussing many of these issues and answering small businesses’ questions on these areas. To paraphrase one of the analysts we were speaking with, ‘small can still be complex we still want quick and easy to use solutions’. Amen to that.
